I'm not saying that all conventions are wrong, merely that some of them are silly; and nowhere is this more evident than in the matter of dress. We seem to have lost sight of the fact that homo sapiens adopted clothing in the first place to beamore comfort- able. Yet the more conven- tional among us, myself in- cluded, think nothing of wearing a shirt, a tie, a jac- ket and long pants in the middle of a heat wave. It makes me wonder whether we're capable of opening our minds wide enough to see larger truths, or whether, burdened by conventional thinking, we will all finally disappear in a mushroom - shaped obscenity which rep- resents our ultitnate ingenu- ity. All of this was brought to mind a few days ago in an in- nocent little piece of wire copy from Italy, where the Supreme Court has been de- voting itself to a milestone ruling on the acceptable de- gree of nudity on public beaches. The court ruled that bare bosoms are per- missable for women as well as men, but that nudity be- low the waist remains taboo. The ruling on nudity below the waist said, and I quote, that it was still likely to cause unease, repulsion .. . or erotic excitement in an observer of normal sensi- bility. We've come a long way- from eaves and animal skins, and the . obvious truth of the Italian Supreme Court's ruling is mute testi- mony to what mankind has managed to do to itself. Early manwouldn't have dreamed of covering himself with a hot skin to lie on the beach in the blazing sun and to go for a swim. He put the skin on because it was cold, not because he or she was afraid of repelling or excit- ing someone else with a glimpse of the undraped human form. He would have killed himself laughing if he'd known what succeeding generations would do to themselves with clothing. The most useless item of clothing we have, in its cur- rent form, is the necktie. It's no accident that it became a nickname for the hangman's rope. Generation after generation of male western- ers strangle themselves with the loathsome thing on a daily basis, and I only wish that the Canadian Supreme Court would rule against it. The necktie may not cause sexual excitement, but it certainly causes a good deal of unease and repulsion in those of us who have to wear it. If a court can rule that we must keep our bottoms on, why can't one rule. that we must keep our neckties off? BOOK REVI WHO'S BURIED WHERE IN ENGLAND. By Douglas Greenwood. Academic Press Canada, Don Mills, Ont. 304 pp. 522.50. Reviewed by PERCY MADDUX Here is a little book that will guide you in visiting places of interment of famous people or seeing monuments to them. Doug- las Greenwood's "Who's Buried Where in England" is not a "Who's Who of the Dead" but a selection of famous people who have graves or monuments in England — not England and Wales, just England. al- though the map, showing counties, includes Wales. The entries are not ar- ranged alphabetically but by categories and alphabetical within each category, each item containing some bio- graphical material, making this a good book for reference entirely apart from location of grave. The black and white photographs are of people, monuments. and inscriptions as well as actual grave markers. You will not find all your friends here. For example, there is no mention of Leigh Hunt, who is buried at Ken - sal Green Cemetery in Lon- don. However, famous people and less famous people are included in this very attractive volume which in itself is a pleasant place in which to roam.
