By JEFF WARD
It is always a good idea
to take your forced moves
first, and then consider
your optional moves. In
this case, X must bear off
at least one man from the
5 -point, and must move at
least one man from the 6 -
point to the 1 -point. X
should therefore make
these two moves and then
consider how to play the
final pair of 5's.
Safety is a consideration
— X certainly does ' not
want ,to be bit while bear-
ing off. Ordinarily, the saf-
est procedure is to clear
points in order beginning
with the highest. This posi-
tion is no exception; X's
safest play is to clear the 6 -
point with 6/1(3), 5/off
(Play A).
However, a slightly bet-
ter play is bearing three
men off with 6/1, 5/off (3),
(Play B). This play is only
slightly more dangerous
than Play A. After Play B,
only 6-1 and 5-1 by X give
0: an mrnediate chance- -
hit, and even if 0 does hit,
X is far from lost.
In fact, X will probably
still win. Because 0 has a
weak home board, X will
probably re-enter right
away and start moving
toward home. Meanwhile,
0 has the problem of bring-
ing the second man in, hit-
ting the X man as it comes
around, and then bearing in
and off without being hit by
X. These problems make
winning difficult for 0
under the best of circum-
stances.
Play B provides a major
advantage for X: it greatly
increases his chances of
winning a gammon. Bear-
ing off three men instead
of one puts X, at least tem-
porarily, a full roll closer
to bearing off his last man.
In many possible
sequences of rolls, X can
maintain this advantage to
the very end.
Saving the gammon is a
close issue. With Play A, 0
will avoid the gammon
more often than not. In
fact, 0 should escape the
gammon a full 60 percent
of the time.
With Play B, 0 will es-
cape the gammon less
often — probably about 5
percent less often. Since a
gammon represents a 4 -
point win instead of 2, X
has a strong incentive to
make the riskier play —
especially since the addi-
tional risk is very small.
Points are numbered 1
to 24, starting with X's
home board at the lower
left. A move, for example,
from the 7 -point to the 3 -
point is written 7/3. 7/3*
means that a man was bit
on the 3 -point. 7/3(2) means
that two men were moved
to the 3 -point.
