By JEFF WARD
In backgammon par-
lance, 0 is playing a "2-4
back game," so called be-
cause 0 holds the 2- and 4 -
points in X's home board.
X is "defending" against
the back game.
X has a number of harm-
less ways of playing the 2-1
that involve moving the
extra men on the 7- and 8-
points. Better, though, is to
move a man from the 13 -
point to the 10 -point.
By moving to the 10-
point, X threatens to com-
plete a 6 -point prime, mak-
ing it impossible for O's
back men to escape as long
as the prime exists.
Although some might
disagree, I feel that X
should also hit, playing the
roll as 13/124110. X's main
goal is to see O's home
board destroyed, and hit-
ting now seems to make
this more likely.
With five men trapped
behind X's prime, 0 will
have to play all or most of
his next few rolls with his
other 10 men. This makes it
more likely that these Men
will -wind-up-piled on O's
lower home board points.
If this happens, O's
chances of winning will be
remote because his home
board won't be strong
enough to trap any' X men
he may hit.
The key to this strategy
is the difficulty of 0 get-
ting any of his back men
out. Right now, only a 6 al-
lows 0 to free a man. But
this requires 0 to break the
4 -point, which seriously re-
duces chances of get-
ting a shot later.
By hitting, X forces 0 to
try to maneuver the fifth
back man up to the 4 -point
so that it can escape with-
out breaking a point. But
meanwhile X may make
the 10 -point, to prevent any
such escape.
If X can't make the 10 -
point, X should leave a blot
there. Them, if 0 is lucky
enough to escape, he must
hit X's blot in the process.
This helps X by delaying
X's advance and giving 0
more opportunities for his
position to self-destruct.
Notice that if X nis hit, it
will be almost impossible
for 0 to trap the man for
long. 0 has just too many
checkers out of play —two
onthe 24 -point and four
left in X's home board — to
build aa effective block-
ade.
Points are numbered
to 24, starting with X's
home board at the lower
left. A move, for example,
from the 7 -point to the 3 -
point is written 7/3. 7/3'
means that a man was hit
on The 3 -point. 7/3(2) means
that two men were moved
to the 3 -point -
