The music, which developed from the gospel melodies of the American south into the "soul" of today also has come into its own since the days when black artists' photographs were' not even allowed on album covers. The difficulties faced by black musicians forced Berry Gordy to take a change and form a record company to promote black artists and their music. After a few lean years, Motown was established and so were its stars. Those early stars, like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson, all returned to pay their own personal tributes to the man and the company which made them famous. Other performers appearing were Michael Jackson and the other members of the Jackson family, Linda Ronstadt and Martha Reeves. They showed the stuff that makes black music great: snappy, happy beats and great choreography. Diana Ross summed it up by concluding, "Motown is forever." 0-0-0 0 To add to his Grammies earned for the same recording, Willie Nelson has taken two top Country Music Awards for his release of "Always On My Mind". It was named single of the year and an album by the same name was named album of the year. Named top male vocalist was Ronnie Milsap and top vocal duet was David Frizzell and Shelly West. The song of the year award, which is given to the com- poser, went to "Are the Good Times Really Over?" by Merle Haggard who also recorded the song. The group, Alabama, was named entertainer of the year and top vocal group. Sylvia was named the top female vocalist of the year.
