Congram, in a Chevrolet
dealership in town for
several years.
An active member of St.
Andrew's Presbyterian
Church, Mr. Carr had served
as an elder. He was also a
member of the Wingham
Lions Club and the Wingham
Masonic Lodge.
Jim Carr was probably
best known for his years of
service as a volunteer
firefighter. He joined the
brigade on May 3, 1930, when
hand -drawn equipment was
used to fight fires and was an
active member when the
first motorized pumper was
purchased in 1937. He was
named fire chief in 1940,
succeeding Albert Louttit,
and held that position until
1967 when Dave Crothers
became chief and Mr. Carr
deputy chief. He held that
position until his death.
During his years as chief,
many changes took place in
the Wingham Fire Depart-
ment. In 1951, he was 'in-
strumental in the passing of
a mutual agreement, the
first of its kind in the
province, between the town
and the surrounding com-
munities served by the fire
brigade. With a subsidy from
the Ontario government, a
new pumper was purchased
so the town would retain
adequate coverage if the
first pumper were called to
service in a neighboring
community. The number of
firefighters was increased
that year from 16 to 20. Also
during Chief Carr's term,
Wingham became the first
department to appoint
auxiliary firefighters, men
placed on standby in case of
emergency needs.
Mr. Carr was predeceased
by his parents, Alfred Carr
and Ella Deans; two
brothers, Neil and Donald ;
and an infant son, Donald.
He is survived by his wife,
the former Eva Mildred
Bannerman, whom he
married in Bervie on • Oc-
tober 27, 1934; three sons,
Douglas of Wingham, David,
Port Elgin, and Brian,
Wingham; two grand-
children and one sister,
Edna Agnes Carr of
Wingham.
Many friends paid their
respects at The Currie -
Walker Funeral Home,
Wingham, until Monday
when funeral service was
conducted at two o'clock by
Rev. Paul Mills. Interment
followed in Wingham Ceme-,
tery.
To show their affection and
respect for a former chief,
Dave Crothers, Kees
deVries, Brian Elmslie,
Kevin Hickey, Andy Foxton
and Philip Foxton formed a
uniformed guard of honor
representing the Wingham
Fire Department. Pall-
bearers were Ralph Nixon,
Fred Lewis, Denis Lang -
