Scented lace pillows are beautiful in the bedroom; tiny versions tuck neatly into shelves and stocking drawers. It's easy to weave white lace into a pillow front. For added interest, ribbons provide " decorative bor- ders. If you don't have a scrap bag of ribbons and lace, you can buy all you need from your local variety store. You'll find sachet supplies in your garden or supermarket. Here are directions for ribbon and lace pillows: MATERIALS: For all pillows: White lace; velvet; satin or grosgrain ribbon; sewing supplies. Note: The smaller the pillow, the skinnier the ribbons and laces you'll need. For bedroom pillows: 12x12 -inch square of white fabrics for _-pillow front' 12x12 -inch square of veel- vet, lk, atinr- hr lux- ury sifabric sfor opillowoteback; polyester fiberfill or sachet for stuffing. For .tiny sachet pillows: 6x6 -inch square of white fabric for pillow front; 6x6 - inch square velvet, silk, satin, or other luxury fab- ric for pillow back sachet. SACHET INGRED- IENTS: Either . purchase enough sachet to fill your pillow, or mix sachet ac- cording to your scent pref- erence as follows: 1. Fill a bowl with dried rose petals or scented tea. 2. Mix in spice, such as cin- namon, mint, cloves or ginger. 3. Add rose oil to rose petal mixtures. 4. Cover bowl with plastic wrap until needed. LACE WEAVING: 1. De- pending upon the. size of your pillow, cut lace into 6 - inch or 12 -inch lengths. 2. Lay white fabric square on a flat surface. Arrange lace strips on fabric in close -together, parallel, ho- rizontal rows. 3. Stitch lace ends in place. 4. Weave ad- ditional lace strips under and over horizontal lace strips in Close -together, parallel, vertical rows. 5. Stitch down Lace ends. RIBBON BORDERS: 1. Cut four 6 -inch or 12 -inch lengths of ribbon. 2. Baste ribbons approximately 1 inch from raw edges of woven -lace, pillow front. 3. Machine stitch ribbons in place, keeping lines of stitching as close as possi- ble to ribbon edges. 4. Cut four 4 -inch or 9 -inch lengths of ribbon. 5. Baste ribbons to pillow front, tucking under raw ends of ribbon. 6. Machine -stitch ribbons in place. RUFFLE: 1. Depending upon size of pillow, piece together 1 or 2 yards of lace. 2. Press open seams. 3. Sew two rows of long, gathering stitches to raw edge of lace. 4. Gather threads to fitlace around pillow front. 5. With right sides facing, and raw edges together, baste lace ruffle to pillow front. ASSEMBLY: 1. With right sides facing, and ruf- fle inside, stitch pillow front to pillow back. Sew I/2 inch seams; leave a small opening for turning. 2. Clip corners; turn pillow to right side. 3. Either stuff with sachet or polyester fi- berfill. 4. Sew opening dosed with tiny hem stitches.
