JOHN JACKSON DEAR DOROTHY: I'm 68 years old, have been re- tired for three years, and have taken my place on the shelf, set aside from the active side of the world. I'm in excellent health, but often feel, depressed because I miss the activity - I have been _used to all_ my_,. _. life. My biggest accom- plishment now is a lonely game of solitaire. Big deal! - F.F. Dear F.F.: Aging means to grow and achieve. It was never meant to shove you, without reason, into "soli- taire" confinement. You're vibrating with action, seen in that flowing forward slant and the loop on y. It's a must that your life be kept moving, and re- alizing your obligation to other people. Note that large begin- ning loop on capital I. You still want to be much to many and you have the de- sire and ability to shoulder a great responsibility. You're a winner all the way (not just with 52 cards). Your excitement to live and give is seen in the long sweeping t crossing, plus the final stroke on e. They're the traits that put the spark and spice in your life. How about investigating organizations for retired persons? There are several unique organizations, with "dynamic retirement" as their goal. This could keep your hopes high and might fulfill some of your life- time dreams. Just never, never count on being "shelved." Be- cause, in the first place, no shelf will hold you. I'd like to do some decorating of a summer house ' we- have - recently bought and wish to make more attractive. The living room is relatively small, with two windows and plain walls and wood floor. What sort of interesting wall treatment might we use? I'd like some wallpa- per, I believe. We like rather traditional but plain designs. - R.N.B. A. If your room is small with few windows you might like to create some feeling ofspaciousness, which you could do with a wall covering. Select a sce- nic panel for one wall that dominates your room. Paper other walls in the background pattern of the scenic of in a complemen- tary pattern. This can give you visual interest and ex- tend the eye. If you wish to go to the trouble you can create in- teresting wall arrange- ments for your scenic. For example, you could frame your scenic with two-by- fours painted a contrasting color. Extend the wood be- yond the scenic to create other panels that can be filled in with your comple- mentary wallpaper. The two-by-four arrangement adds depth to the wall and a more finished, custom look. Q. I need some budget ideas for window treat- ment in my family room. I want a casual look in the room, which has a plaid couch and old (but not an- tique) pieces that are whimsical and attractive. What do you suggest? - P.C. A. Two ideas might be appropriate for you to choose from. One is to take inexpen- sive bamboo or plastic matchstick blinds and with a giant embroidery needle weave moderate -to -thick yarn through the blinds to create horizontal or verti- cal bands of color. Take the color cues from the plaid in your couch or the color scheme of the room. This takes some patience but not too much money. Or second, consider lam- inating fabric to standard window shades. This can give you an equally attrac- tive look and is excellent for the budget -conscious decorator. Shop for the blinds that are manufactured to take lamination. These have an adhesive that is activated by a warm iron when fab- ric is placed on top of the shade fabric. If you could find an inexpensive print fabric you could apply it to the shades and maybe even a piece of furniture to have a coordinated look. Q. I have a problem in that my lightweight living room furniture was the proper scale in my previ- ous apartment. But now In larger quarters- the furni ture isn't weighty enough. I don't feel I can replace the furniture because it is reasonably new and in good shape. Would deeper colors for upholstery help? - E.P. A. Deeper colors might add more weight to your furniture but often reu- pholstery costs are terribly high. Have you ever con- sidered adding an area rug to your seating area - per- haps under the entire seat- ing arrangement? This can tie your furniture together and add visual weight to your light seating group. Q. I have two small win- dows on each side of my fireplace. I don't need the windows covered for pri- vacy because they look onto a secure patio. How- ever, my living room is decorated with traditional 18th and 19th century reproductions. The wooden fireplace, the ceiling mold- ing and window frames are all painted cream. I have an orange and brown copy of an Oriental rug with touches of olive green. What would you do with the windows? - N.N.M. A. If you don't need pri- vacy, why don't you just add a soft touch of fabric to your windows by way of a short swag at the top of each window.
