Great and
By Donald V. Martin
"Your Pet's
Best Behavior"
Your new kitten or puppy
has just arrived home! As
you watch your pet romp,.
you may be struck with.
amazement when yot think
of the preparation and
thought required to are for
him over the years ahead.
However, while pondering
your newly discovered
"parental" jitters, you
should also realize that your
pet, like a loving child, will
reward you with endless
hours of enjoyment.
One of the first decisions
you must make, concerns
proper behaviour handling.
Some very good books have
been written on this subject
alone and the following hints
are meant to get you started
on the right track in teaching
your pet who is boss before
he decides to run your home.
Learning how to become
your pet's master will. re-
quire gentle but firm action
on your part. The first step is
to gather all family mem-
bers in your home and decide
what your house rules will
be. This must be a team ef-
fort or your pet will become
confused if everyone reads
from their own rule book.
Discuss specifics. For in-
stance, are you going to let
your puppy climb on the
furniture? Is your kitten
allowed on . the kitchen
counter?
Once the ground rules
have been established, stick
to them! Consistency is very
important when training
your pet. Adhering to rules
without exceptions will en-
sure rapid success. Failure
to be responsible in this re-
gard will produce a poorly
m nnered pet who will soon
rule the household. Imagine
how easily he could domin-
ate your "castle", taking
your favorite chair as his
throne, tyrannizing guests
and turning up his nose in
royal disdain at mealtime.
Reinforce. the dominant -
subordinate relationship be-
tween you and your pet in a
mild but persistent manner.
First of all, place your puppy
or kitten on a table. Initially,
it is best to conduct this pro-
cedure off the floor, on
"neutral" ground where the
pet is less confident.
Stroke your pet's neck a
few times to reassure,_him
and then gently but firmly
hold your pet while looking
into the ears and then eyes.
Next, open its mouth wide
and finally, handle each
paw, gently squeezing each
toe. When you've gone
through these motions,
stroke the neck again to re-
assure your pet and reward
him for his submission.
Spend extra time in areas he
objects to, e.g. his rear paws.
Do this at least 12 times daily
for the first few months.
Periodic repeats should fol-
low to reinforce learned
behaviour.
This procedure is not some
strange ritual but in fact,a
subtle domination process
which will truly benefit you
and your pet in the future.
For example, if your pet is
choking on something, he is
less likely to panic when you
attempt to dislodge the
object. It will also be much
easier for you and less
traumatic for your pet when
you have to administer
medication or clip nails.
You can earn the trust and
confidence of your new
puppy or kitten by under-
standing the proper route to
behavioral handling.
