One of the best male im- ages on TV today belongs to "Hour Magazine" host GARY COLLINS — - and he's quite frank about the fact that he does pay atten- tion to how he looks, on screen as well as' off. "In general," says this handsome blond, "men have not been geared to think about fashion the way women have. They're not, for example, aware of what colors really flatter them. It's just not some- thing we naturally think about, but it is important. "Men usually select their wardrobe according to what they think they should own," he continues, "like a navy„ blazer or a gray suit, without stopping to seriously consider, °Is this really right for me? Do I look good wearing this?' It can really change your appearance if you can re- train your, mind to think that way." Since "Hour Magazine" has just been presented with a prestigious award from the Men's Fashion As- sociation of America, cit- ing the show as casting the best men's fashion image on TV, Gary is more aware than ever of putting his best foot forward in terms of the clothes he wears. The outfits you see on the show are made espe- cially for Gary with fabrics from the Henry Grethel LOFT OPEN GOO 12 Noon to 8 p.m. All Sunday specials will apply on Good friday. GARY COLLINS . Pays attention to how he looks — on screen as well as off collection of menswear. But when it comes to his personal wardrobe, he is quick to admit that his wife, actress and former Miss America, MARY ANN MOBLEY, lends more than a helping hand. "She definitely has good taste," says Gary, "and she knows the classic look I like. Very often she will see something and have it put away for me and then I'll go down and try it on when I have time. "Mostly," he confesses, "her choices are really right for me." When it comes to firm- ing and toning the beautiful body that shows off all those great clothes, though he is an avid skier and ten- nis player, Gary admits his real physical addiction is running. "I run at least three or four miles a day," he says, "and I've been doing it for 25 years. "One day I woke up with a terrible hangover and someone suggested I run it off. Well, I don't have to tell you how unappealing running is when you're in that condition. But I tried it and afterward I felt so wonderful that I was hooked on it. "I find that not only does running burn calories, which helps keep your weight down, but it helps me feel mentally better as well." A half-hour before he be- gins his workout, Gary drinks a cup of coffee sweetened .with honey for extra energy and does not eat for at ' least an hour after he returns. Sexy Gary Collins defi- nitely makes female hearts pound and breathing more difficult when he's around. But what turns him on about a woman? "Clean," he says, flash- ing those bright baby blues. "Little or no makeup, a natural look; that's a real turn -on for me. I find it very sensual. "And I love career women. Some men tend to be put off by a woman if she has a life outside the home, but I love it. I find that it's the coming togeth- er of two different worlds and two different interests that really makes for an in- teresting life. "And," he adds, "the bot- tom line is a sense of humor. If you can share laughter with a woman, that's great. "Beauty," he concludes, with a reflective look in his eyes, "is all tied up with many different things, a lot of which has to do with what's inside a woman. It's the whole way she feels about herself. Her ambi- ance, her confidence, these are the elements that come together to form the chem- istry we call falling in love. "And when you love a woman, she's truly beauti- ful in your eyes, regardless of whether or not she fits into the preconceived no- tion of what beauty should be." Pulse pregnancy test The ancient Chinese thought a physician could tell whether a woman was pregnant by feeling her pulse. ra By Louisa Rush The other day I was asked if I had instructions for dou- ble thickness knitting. This is a method whereby you knit with just two needles, but form a circular tube of knit- ting. It is joined at the begin- ning, but it is possible to cast off separately or by joining the stitches. I was unable to locate these particular instructions at the time, as I have an extensive collection . of knitting books, and one just can't remember in which one certain ideas are printed. I was lucky in that a reader, Mrs. Hartenburger of Weyburn, Sask., sent me some photostat pages which jogged my memory as to which book they were in. It was the Complete Needle- work Encyclopedia, origin- ally published by King Pat- terns, but is now being pub- lished by Patons and Bald- wins. This handy volume con- tains all you need to know for knitting, crocheting, tatting and rug -hooking, with basic stitches in hairpin lace, nee- dlepoint, embroidery, crewel embroidery and macrame. It also has helpful and de- tailed illustrations of how to work these various crafts along with simple, yet at- tractive things to make. I find it invaluable as a refer- ence book. It retails for only $2.50 which I feel is a terrific bargain, and it is available at your local yarn or depart- ment store. For those of you interested in double thickness or tube knitting, it is a relatively easy procedure. You will need an even number of stitches. Cast on fairly tightly; then knit one, yarn to front as if to purl, slip one as if to purl, yarn to back; repeat across row. Continue to repeat this row for desired, length. You will be making a tube of stocking -stitch. It is possible to do reversed stocking -stitch, seed or moss stitches and ribbing working in this manner, all are des- cribed in the Complete Needlecraft Encyclopedia. 0 0 0 This week's pattern is for embroidery, and what could be more adorable than these cute Teddy Bears on a place mat? They would look equally attractive along the bottom of the nursery cur- tains, or on blocks to make a quilt. They are simply and easily worked by hand with outline stitch, and chain stitch used for filling in, with satin stitch for paws. However, if you have one of the latest sewing machines with all the gad- gets for working fancy stitches, this design would be very easy to do. Complete outline, plus instructions are on Leaflet No. 8370 and can be obtained by sending 75 cents plus a stamped self addressed re- turn envelope. If you do not have a stamp or envelope, please enclose an. extra 50 cents to cover the cost of Flick out stinger Beestings should be scratched to remove the barb, advises an Australian surgeon whose hobby is bee- keeping. Dr. T.A.R. Dinning of the Royal Adelaide Hospi- tal says that by trying to squeeze out the stinger you invariably force the venom into your skin because the injected barb is in a tiny venom sac.
