GORDON GREEN " Ever since I was booted out of a soft college job be- cause I had committed the unpardonable sin of getting too old, I have been teaching three days a week in the new all -Indian high school at Caughnawaga. The Indian, it seems, is convinced that "age does not weary nor the years condemn". Not neces- sarily, at least. And it has not only been a delightful experience for me but a very enlightening one. I Say "enlightening" because for the first time I have had the opportunity of seeing my own race — its alleged pro- gress, its religious profes- sions and its enormous con- ceit — through the eyes of another race. And this is a race which is so quietly cer- tain of the folly and the danger inherent in my cul- ture that it is more deter- mined than ever to fence it- self clear of it. Here for instance, is the text from a poster which happens to look down on the humbled desk reserved for me at this remarkable school. An Awkwasesne Mo- hawk named Bill Laughing is responsible for the words as well as the beautiful artwork in which they are set. It is called "The Great Mother's Lament", the Great Mother is of course, Mother Earth. My people have been with me a long time. They came to me, They sat on my lap, And we spoke with meaning. We learned to live together, They became my children. When they were hungry I fed them. They took no more than needed. They wasted not. We shared. We became plentiful. A short time ago another people came to me. They ignored me and called mea thing. They took more than needed and left the rest to rot. They pulled my hair, never to grow again. They destroyed and changed my children, They poisoned me and my life streams. Yet still they. take. Soon, I shall give no more. It is comforting to note however that the Indian is still capable of humor as he assesses the white man's sins and follies. In the little school paper which our stu- dents put together last month° I see for instance this bit called "A Short History". It was not written by a stu- dent however but seems to have been donated by some- one's father or granddad. As a little boy I asked my grandfather what the Red- man had done to make the White Man hate him so. My grandfather replied that it was because the Red- man did everything back- wards, like eating buffalo in- stead of killing them for sport; like looking at the sun instead of a clock; like think- ing that a man is rich ac- cording to what he gives away rather than what he possesses; like thinking that a person becomes wise with old age instead of old and feeble and useless; like the way even the men wear their hair, long and decorated in- stead of clean cut as a gentleman should. The Redman held back progress, my Grandfather said. That was why it was necessary to kill him even when he did not have a gun and was defenseless. And that was why it was neces- sary to re-educate the left- overs on government reservations. After all, my Grandfather said with a twinkle, the Red- man had no right here: we all know that Columbus dis- covered America, don't we son? .. .
