wrestled from the Wallace

ACTION WAS FAST- FURIOUS around the Howick net
early in the second period, as Lucan pressed for
another goal in the game for the °D' championship at the
Wingham Midget Hockey Tournament 'on Sunday. A
Howick, Unionville also win
Howick player keeps a grip on his check while another
clears the rebound. Howick trailed 2-1 late in the se-
cond, but scored two quick goals in the final minute to
grab the lead and went on to win 7-3.
Wingham repeats as C champs
in Midget Hockey Tournament
By Peter Bauer
Playing in front of a large
and enthusiastic hometown
crowd, the Wingham Lions
Midgets repeated as 'C'
division champions in the
Wingham Midget Hockey
Tournament with a 5-4 cliff-
hanger victory over
Tavistock Sunday night.
Tavistock opened the
scoring in the championship
game at 4:55 on Rob Wiffen's
powerplay goal. Wingham
then fought back with four
straight goals, as Mark
Foxton scored two and Paul
Kenyon and Steve Nicholson
got singles. Tavistock
Captain Bryn Gladding got
one back to make it 4-2 with
only seven seconds left in the
period.
Roger Wagler scored the
only goal of the middle
frame, closing the count to 4-
3.
Foxton finished off his hat
trick at 5:47 of the third
period, picking up a rebound
at the right of the Tavistock
goal, moving to the left and
firing the puck into the open
corner to give Wingham a 5-3
bulge.
Following that goal,
Wingham had a perfect
opportunity to ice the win as
it played with a two-man
advantage but looked less
than spectacular on the
powerplay. -
Tavistock then had the
same opportunity, as the
home team took some foolish
penalties and was forced to
play two men short for two
minutes and a man short for
an additional two minutes.
Brad Stere brought a hush
over the Wingham fans as he
scored at 9:43 with three
minutes left in the second
penalty. Tavistock continued
to apply good pressure, but
good defensive work and
solid goaltending by Rob
Schistad kept them from
tying the game and
preserved the 5-4 victory.
Wingham had made it to
the finals by skating to a 5-2
win over Durham in the 'C'
division opener the previous
weekend, following up with a
3-2 overtime win over a
tough Mitchell team.
Tavistock found its way to
the finals by soundly
defeating ..Wiarton 10-3
Friday morning and then
trouncing Ridgetown 6-1.
HOWICK WINS
'D' CHAMPIONSHIP
Earlier in the afternoon,
the Howick Midgets claimed
the 'D' title with a 7-3 victory
over Lucan in a hardfought
game that was closer than
the final score would in-
dicate.
Brent Bannerman gave
Lucan an early 1-0 lead in the
first period before Steve
Wright's long shot found the
net to leave the score
deadlocked at 1-1 at the end
of the first period. .
In the second, Jeff McFalls
again put Lucan ahead as
Howick had trouble finishing
off its plays around the net.
However two quick goals at
the end of the period sent
Howick into the dressing
room with a 3-2 lead on goals
by Kevin Ruttan and Dave
Harding.
Howick pulled away in the
third period, as Ruttan
netted his second as did
Harding and Kevin Hallman
added two more. Mike
Dewan scored the third
Lucan goal, and that team
spoiled any chances of a
comeback with penalties late
in the game.
Kevin Ruttan was named
the most valuable player in
the 'D' division.
Howick had advanced to
the final by registering a 5-2
win over Lucknow in last
weekend's t action and
knocking off a stubborn
Blyth team 5-4 Saturday
morning. Lucan started off
with a 4-2 win over Ripley
Thursday night and followed
that with a 6-1 victory over
Zurich Saturday.
UNiONVILLE TAKES
'B' CHAMPIONSHIP
Unionville edged Merriton
7-6 in a scoring battle that
almost came down to the last
shot on goal to win the 'B'
division title on Sunday.
After leading by a 4-2 count
after the first period and 6-4
after two, Unionville saw its
lead slip away as Paul
Hoekstra, who had four goals
'for Merriton, scored twice
early in the third period to tie
the score.
However Dave Francey's
late goal with 4:09 remaining
proved to be the winner as
Unionville clipped its op-
ponents 7-6.
Neither goaltender had a
particularly good game,
however the Unionville
goalie came up with a good
glove save on a shot in the
final seconds to preserve the
victory.
Paul Takahashi and Rod
Beckett had two goals each
for Unionville, with Brad
Adams,, and Mark Mateer
rounding out the scoring.
Glenn White had the only
other Merriton goals.
White won the MVP award
for the 'B' division, as he
scored seven goals in three
games.
Unionville earned a berth
in the championship playoff
by first defeating Fergus 8-5
Thursday afternoon and then
taking a 7-4 decision from
Walkerton in the final game
played Thursday. Merriton
defeated St. Benedicts 8-7
early Saturday, then came
away 6-2 winners over
Goderich late Saturday
evening to qualify for the
final.

Belmore downs Blues
By Nancy Bieman
The Wingham Blues fell
behind one game to none in
their WOAA finals against
the Belmore Sugar Kuties
Sunday afternoon in
Belmore. A goal scored by
Belmore's Kate Kieffer with
only six seconds left in the
first overtime period lifted
her team to the victory.
The game remained
scoreless throughout the
first two periods, in spite of
many scoring opportunities.
The Wingham girls each
gave 110 per cent and their
efforts paid off when Julaine
Adams carried the puck
from centre ice with
tremendous authority to
leave three Belmore players
behind and finally tuck it
past a surprised goaltender
at 11:26 of the third.
With just over four
minutes left in regulation
time, Janet Schefter shot the
puck through a maze of
players to find the mark and
tie the game at one -all.
The match entered
overtime with end-to-end
rushes providing the fans
with lots of excitement. The
Blues' fans were the first to
cheer when Adams took a
shot that found the net after
being deflected off the skate
of Eileen O'Donoghue. The
referees disallowed the goal
on the grounds that
O'Donoghue kicked the puck
into the net.
It appeared the game
would end in a tie until Kim
Leslie broke out of her own
end and hit Kieffer with a
perfect pass to come in and
score with just six seconds
remaining on the clock.
BLUE LINES—Adams
played her best game of the
season, scoring Wingham's
only goal of the game. She
is a very keen, dedicated
player and her hard work
has paid off well for the
team. Eileen O'Donoghue
also skated hard and always
seemed to be in the right
place at the right time.
Wingham Goaltender
Esther Nethery kept the
Blues in what might have
been a one-sided game. Her
many fine saves robbed the
Sugar Kuties of many
scoring chances. It seems
Kieffer was not sure whether
the game -winning goal was
over the line when she
rammed Nethery into the
net, injuring her leg. The
team wishes her a speedy
recovery because she is its
backbone and without her
the team certainly will have
its work cut out for it when
the girls face Belmore again
this Saturday night.
So, for lots of playoff ac-
tion, be at the Lockridge
Memorial Arena this
Saturday at 8 p.m. for a "do
or die" match -up for the
Blues as Belmore leads the
best two -out -of -three series
one game to none.

sixth game of that playoff
series.
The loss Sunday gave
Tavistock a 4-2 series victory
and advanced them to the
finals.

game were Mark Leslie,
Troy Pocaluyko and Dorren
Foerter.
This was a rewarding year

West led the attack with five

a single for Wiarton.

shutout of Teeswater
Saturday afternoon.

shutout, the second in
tournament play. Jeff Bros
scored three times for Mild-
may, with Kevin. Inlgis
adding two and Bryan
Kueneman the single.
The consolation final in the
'B' division was just as
lopsided, with Kingsville
romping to a 12-3 win over
Listowel on Sunday.
Kingsville ` received a
three -goal performance
from Mike Pratt, and his
offensive efforts were
bolstered by two -goal per-
formances from Jeff
Reneau, Aful Nanda and
Darren Stomp.
The first period ended with
Kingsville ahead by a
narrow 3-2 margin, but they
erupted for six goals in the
second period to make it 9-3
after two.

supplied by Todd Hutton,
Tom Newbigging and Mike
Town.
