Reco
Ontario farmers can select
from 225 recommended corn
hybrids for the 1983 produc-
tion year, says Dr. Bruce
in
Hunter, cha'rman of the
Ontario Corn Committee.
After four s of deliber-
ations, 39 new hybrids were
added, while 41 hybrids were
deleted from the previous
list.
The ' committee met with
representatives of all seed
orn dealers across Ontario
uring the session.
Hunter says province -wide
ests on more than 400
hybrids wiere conducted at 16
rest stations, representing a
neat unit range of 2,350 to
3,500. Each hybrid evalua-
tion was based on yield,
maturity and standability.
He says the committee was
pleased with the quality of
the tests this year and is
confident farmers can make
wise selectionvisions for
planting based on -the report.
He says the committee is
also putting increased em-
phais on obtaining better
stalk quality data in both the
hybrids
Ontario Corn Tests and the
Ontario Corn Performance
Trials.
"It is imperative that far-
mers have the best data
possible on standability; a
hybrid flat in the field is
useless to the fanner."
Hunter says Agriculture
Canada's Plant Products Di-
vision -reports 12,164 hectar-
es (30,046 acres) of seed corn
were inspected in 1982 in the
London -Chatham -Windsor
area for certified status pedi-
greed seed under the regu-
lations of the Canadian Seed
Growers' Association. He
says this acreage is 2,223
less than in 1981. Fields were
also inspected for head smut
but he says samples revealed
only common smut infected
the corn.
He adds that in spite of
uneven initial growth and
development in some seed
corn fields, dry -down was
rapid and harvesting was
completed without major
problems.
"Yields were very good
and all indications suggest
that seed germination and
quality are also good. Farm-
ers can be assured of a good
seed supply in 1983."
The Ontario Corn Commit-
tee is an organization made
up of representatives of Ag-
riculture Canada, the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food, the University of
Guelph, the Ontario Soil and
Crop Improvement Associa-
tion, the Ontario Seed Corn
Growers' Marketing Board,
the Canadian Seed Trade
Association and the Canad-
ian Seed Growers' Associa-
tion.
The 1983 report is avail-
able at county OMAF offices
and local agri-businesses.
"In today's tight economy
farmers must take advantage
of all avenues open to them
to increase productivity. By
using the 1983 list of recom-
mended corn hybrids and the
report of hybrid corn per-
formance trials for 1981 and
1982, farmers are better able
to maximize returns from
their corn fields."
Recent sale to Spain opens
major new corn market
The recent sale to Spain of
85,000 tonnes of Ontario
corn, valued at nearly $8.5
million, opens us a major
new market for the provin-
ces's corn producers comple-
menting traditional ones in
Russia and Cuba.
Commenting on the sale,
Agriculture and Food Min-
ister Dennis Timbrell said,
"In the search for additional
customers, the ministry or-
ganized an exploratory trade.
mission to Spain and Portu-
gal last spring in co-opera-
tion with the Ontario Grain
Corn Council?'
In October, representativ-
es from six major corn buyers
and users in Spain came to
Ontario to see the , corn
production industry, elevator
handling and grading syst-
ems, the Great Lakes trans-
portation network and grain
elevator facilities in Montre-
al.
"We We expected these trade
missions to pay dividens but
not until later this year;
therefore, I was very pleased
to learn of this early response
to our efforts," the minister
said.
In 1981, Ontario exported
about 1.25 million tonnes of
corn, primarily to Russia.
The 85,000 tonnes destined
for Spain represents about
eight per cent of this total.
