Many thousands of dollars
are spent each year by
farmers to control pests in
the field. Proper calibration
of equipment and application
accuracy insure that the
money spent on pesticides
achieves the desired effect.
Sprayer calibration and
use was discussed at the
Crop Pest Control course at
CCAT by Milton Dietz, Sea -
forth, who has been selling
spraying equipment, pestic-
ides, and safety equipment
for fifteen years.
°°Before spraying always
remember that a sprayer is a
team of matched components
and that everything must be
in good condition for the
sprayer to work accurately,"
said Dietz. He outlined the
procedures which should be
followed to prepare your
sprayer.
Clean, test, repair and
check all components and
wash out the tank. Replace
worn or damaged hoses and
check the screens. Fill the
tank with water and turn on
the pump, flush the boom
checking for leaks from the
sprayer and boom.
Run the pressure up and
down. Check if all the nozzles
are spraying the same am-
ount. Nozzles may be worn
and should be replaced.
Grease the universal joints
ration ens es
yin is effective
and tandem axles if required.
To calibrate the sprayer
measure off 150 feet, 45
metres and fill the sprayer
with clean water. _Select the
speed and pressure that you
will be using under field
conditions.
Have another .person hold
the calibration bottle under
one nozzle as you, pass the
first marker, and remove it
as you pass the second
marker. The application rate
can be read from the scale on
the bottle.
If the liquid level is off the
scale use a test run of 75 ft.
22.5 metres and multiply the
results by two. Repeat the
test run to verify the results.
Accurate pressure is critic-
al when spraying. A good,
easy to read gauge makes
pressure adjustments and
reading easier while in the
field.
Boom height is important
also to achieve the proper
overlap and complete cover-
age of the surface being
sprayed.For eighty degree
flat fan spray tips eighteen
inches from boom to ground
surface will give good cover-
age.
You can also measure the
wet area under one nozzle.
The wet area should be fifty
per cent wider than the
distance between the nozzles
on the boom.
The boom should remain
parallel to the ground and
held rigid to minimize bounc-
ing and improper coverage of
the soil.
Nozzle delivery can be
checked with a calibration
bottle. Run the sprayer at
operating pressure and col-
lect the material from one
nozzle. Record the number of
seconds to partially fill a
bottle. Record the amount
from each nozzle if the
amount varies more than five
per cent. Calibration bottles
are available from dealers
and give the rate in litres/
hectare and gallons/acre.
With all pesticide recom-
mendations now made in
metric it is important to know
how many litres/hectare
your equipment sprays.
Dietz discussed the pro-
cedure which should be
followed for a good incorpor-
ating job. Tandem discs can
be used, cutting four to six
inches deep at four to six
miles per hour.
Power driven equipment at
a depth of two to three inches
can also be used. A danish-
type cultivator with tires on
six to eight inch centres set
four inches deep in the soil
will incorporate well if driven
at six to eight miles per hour.
In all of these methods the

with those in other jurisdic-
tions.
But McGhee says deter-
mining the major problems
facing rural women and
assigning priorities will be
difficult because of the div-
erse ages, educational back-
grounds and interests among
rural women.
"There's a general feeling
that many of the younger
farm women seem to want
farm business management
courses, farm production
courses and quick, factual
information they can apply
now. But others seem to
want consumer and nutrition
information and home man-
agement programs. Yet,
there are others who seem
more interested in crafts
courses and leisure pro-
grams. "
McGhee says her report
will outline to senior policy
staff, the areas where rural
women's educational inter-
ests and opinions vary wide-
ly.
"I will not formulate policy
but the results of this survey
will shape the ministry's
future educational programs
offered to rural women."
