out of balance, restructuring
may be requested. A ratio of
1:1 for current assets to
current liabilities for regular
income farming to 2:1, for
irregular income farms is
considered good. For long
term, a 1.25:1 ratio is mini-
mum.
A farm plan of operation
for crops and livestock sets a
goal as to your intentions for
the ensuing year. If you don't
have a goal or don't know
where you are going, how do
you know when you get
there? It would be like going
OMAF
establishes
agro-
climatology
unit
To improve the usefulness
of climate and weather infor-
mation for the province's
agricultural industry, the
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food has established a spec-
ial unit in the plant industry
branch to deal with agroclim-
atology, assistant deputy
minister Dr. J. C. Rennie
announced recently.
The unit's first assignment
is to develop a comprehens-
ive agroclimatology pro-
gram, an integrated appro-
ach to weather and climate
information and the restric-
tions these place on agricul-
ture. Among the many areas
to be studied are the role of
climate as it affects produc-
tion, harvesting, transporta-
tion and storage decisions.
"This new initiative in-
volves agricultural aspects of
weather forecasting but it
goes beyond that to look at
the overall impact of climate
on farming," Dr. Rennie
said.
The unit, headed by Brad
Schneller, formerly of the
ministry's programs secret-
ariat, will also use climate
information to assist other
sections of the plant industry
branch in site selection for
crops, integrated pest man-
agement programs and land
use planning.
Schneller, who holds a BSc
from the Ontario Agricultural
College and an MSc from
Cornell University, has had
wide experience in exten-
sion, communications and
program planning in the min-
istry.

on a trip with no destination
in mind. Set crop goals high
but realistic. Try to do better
than you have previously.
With beef, dairy, swine or
poultry production, more
pounds of meat, eggs or milk
per acre might be your aim.
The cash flow projection is
essentially putting the in-
come and expensesinto the
crop and livestock plan of
operation. Family living and
debt servicing of principle
and interest Iratie,he includ-
ed. The best cash 'low is
done on a monthly basis. As
the year progresses, plug in
actual figures beside the pro-
jected figures in the cash
enefits says a
flow. Monitor as you go.
Many things can disrupt a
cash flow. Higher input
costs, lower commodity pric-
es, disease, flood and hail
can all be disastrous and
upset,a cash flow projection.
No interim wheat or white
bean payment is a good ex-
ample currently. These nega-
tives turn around in times of
excellent yield and high
commodity prices. A cash
flow is another management
tool. More and more lending
institutions are requesting
them.

are many and varied:
(1) Financial - Participants
received up to 5% interest
rebate on floating rate mon-
ey.
(2) Understanding - Farmers
hopefully understand their
farm business better.
(3) Knowledge - Farmers can
now prepare farm plans,
cash 41ows and income and
expense statements.
cult
(4) Appreciation - Farmers
appreciate the work done by
the accountants, bank and
OMAF personnel.
(5) Willingness - Farmers are
more willing to prepare or at
least assist in the preparation
of good sound records.
In Huron County, OMAF
staff completed about 350
applications. This repre-
sents about 10%, of our prod-
ucers. We are now much
erep......
closer to the farm financial
situation than we were prev-
iously. It has been an oppor-
tunity for OMAF staff to
work with bank personnel
and accountants. I feel we
are all the wiser for it.
As 1983 moves on, I'm
pleased to see farmers pre-
paring statements, farm
plans and cash flows with a
better understanding than
ever before.
