This year's open winter forecasts an early spring and farmers are looking toward being on
the land In another couple of weeks. Some have already completed sprang plowing and the
planters will soon be common.
Program identifies problems......

are better, and three even
more so. Some farmers soon
were paper millionaires. But
farm income didn't support
the debt load and they found
themselves unable to borrow
their way out of debt.
Parents also encountered
problems when they them-
selves over expanded to
accommodate a child, Sand-
erson said. This led to
problems for the parents.
Other problems were attri-
buted to equipment obses-
sion. Money was spent on
more, bigger, newer shiny
machinery, additions to
buildings which were not
necessary and without know-
ing what the returns would
be.
Some problems were caus-
ed by inadequate insurance
against natural disasters.
One, often forgotten,
cause of financial problems is
lack of family unity, Sander-
son said. Farm problems and
marriage problems go hand
in hand.
He was amazed at the
number of instances where
one or both partners work
outside and without which
the farm would not be fin-
ancially viable.
Then he cited the problem'
arising when farmers try to
anticipate the markets (in-
and-outers. If they are9wrong
in their guesses, losses can
be considerable. He advised
farmers to make changes
gradually.

Finally, Sanderson gave
some do's and don'ts learned
from his work with the com-
mittee; operate on an inform-
ed farm plan; work closely
with your lender; make regu-
lar payments when due;
make necessary adjustments
before borrowing; shop ar-
ound for money; there are
differences in rates.
Do make use of Small
Business Bonds and such.
Shop for such programs. One
bank may have money for
them while another one may
have run out for that pur-
pose; pay off when there is
cash available; maintain sta-
bility on the farm; keep the
peace at home; don't borrow
for capital items unless nec-
essary.
Don't aid and assist others
unless you are prepared to
lose the money; don't plunge
or make rapid changes; don't
consider your farm viable
when you are working out-
side unless you have adjust-
ed this income.
