J. Leuty. institute director has an- nounced. Dale succeeds Dr. Neil W. Miles who assumes new duties as leader of the peach research program. Dale, a native of the Eng- lish midlands, received his early education at Coventry and his university degrees from the University of Shef-, field. Formally trained In botany, Dale has devoted the last eight year to small fruit breeding studies at the Scot- tish Crop Research Institute, at Invergowrie, near Dun- dee, Scotland. His research concerns foc- used on breeding raspberries and black currants for in- creased production, with em- phasis on breeding for mech- anized harvest. "Dale has an enthusiastic interest in carrying on the extensive strawberry re- search program ably directed by Dr. Miles," said Leuty. "Thatinterest, along with his extremely strong re- search background in rasp- berries and currants, will be welcomed by the small fruit industry." Dale assumed his new duties on January 12, 1983. He is located at the Insti- tute's Simcoe Experiment Station. Members named to research institute Four members have been appointed to the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario (ARID) and 11 others have been re -appointed for vary- ing terms said Agriculture and Food Minister Dennis Timbrell. The new members are: Kenneth Murray of Bright, president of J. M. Schneider Inc. and past chairman of the Board of Governors of the University of Guelph; Henry Vanderpol of Blen- heim, former marketing lec- turer at the Universities of Guelph and Windsor and a director of the Ontario Veg- etable Growers' Marketing Board; Maxwell Mcllquham of Lanark, a member of the advisory committee of dip- loma edgcation at Kemptville College of Agricultural Tech- nology and active in the local milk committee and soil and crop improvement associa- tion; Peter Hannam of Guelph, president of the Canadian Farm Management Co-oper- ative and the Foundation for Rural Living and former president of the Ontario Fed- eration of Agriculture. The four new members will serve three years as will Dr. David MacKay of Peter- borough who was re -appoin- ted to the ARIO. Re -appointed for two years were: Dr. Jacques Cartier of Ottawa, Keith Collver of Simcoe, Dr. Donald Wilson of Mississauga and Dr. Dav- id Lees of Scarborough. Drs. Wilson and Lees are also the new chairman and vice-chair- man, respectively, of the ARIO. The following ARIO mem- bers have been re -appointed for one year: Ralph Eastman of Blenheim, Ronald Wolfe of Dobbinton, Dr. Maurice Freeman of Guelph, Robert Murray of Brantford, Gray- don Bowman of Thornloe and Sidney Fraleigh of Thedford. The ARIO makes recom- mendations to the Minister of Agriculture and Food after viewing research programs at the ministry's colleges of agricultural technology, hor- ticultural research and ex- perimental stations to ensure that these meet the needs of Ontario agriculture.
