A magician
or criminal?
MANILA - "We've ei-
ther created a wonderfully
talented magician or a
criminal," Caleb Des-
chanel, director of "The
Escape Artist," said in re-
gards to the future of Grif-
fin O'Neal.
Griffin, now 18 years old,
is son of Joanna Moore and
Ryan O'Neal, brother of
Tatum O'Neal, and actor
who played the title role in
the film Deschanel had
brought to the Manila In-
ternational Film Festival.
Fred Roose, who with
Francis Cuppola was exec-
utive producer of "The Es-
cape Artist," also accom-
panied the movie to Ma-
nila.
"We asked Griffin to
come with us,ry Deschanel
said, "but Ryan ' wouldn't
let him."
In the Zoetrope produc-
tion released by Warners,
Griffin who was 16 when he
was cast, played a kid with
a talent for picking locks,
for sleight of hand and for

GRIFFIN O'NEAL
No door is safe from
his invasion
performing varied Houdi-
ni -style stunts.
To prepare for the role,
he worked with a top es-
capist and magician who
taught him to pick locks so
well that, according to the
producer -and director, no
office door in the area in
which they were working
was safe from his invasion.
Roose had seen a screen
test Griffin had made with
Ryan when the father was
planning to star in "The
Champ" and was pushing
his son for a co-starring
role.
"Fred (Roose) always
backed Griffin for 'The Es-
cape Artist,' " Deschanel
said, "but I had reserva-
tions. In the first place, he
was under 18 and, for that
reason, could only work
four hours a day.
"Also, he's a real Holly-
wood kid who's had a
rather difficult childhood,
so I was nervous about
him."
However after Des-
chanel and Roose had seen
400 to 500 professional chil-
dren and another 700 or 800
who were non -pros and had
even tested a child magi-
cian, the director agreed
that Griffin would be best
for the film.
"We didn't want a syru-
py -sweet kid," Deschanel
explained. "We wanted one
with an edge to him, a little
danger under the surface."
Tatum helped her
brother get the • part by
reading lines with him, but
it was Griffin's innate tal-
ent which cinched his cast-
ing.
"There's something in
his genes," Deschanel
thinks.
"Most of the time I was
more like an older brother
to Griffin, but sometimes I
had to be a father and say,
'All right, now, Grit ...'
„Griffin is a pretty re-
markable kid,"
After the picture was
finished at least a year ago
it was tested through a lot
of previewing as is Cuppo-
la's way, and this slowed
down its release.
The release was further
delayed, because the pic-
ture had been made by
Zoetrope through Orion
through Warner Bros., and
when Orion left Warners, it
left the movie behind.
"Warner's didn't quite
know what to do with it,"
Deschanel said. "It's about
a boy, but it's not a chil-
dren's picture."
t In any case, "The Escape
Artist" opened last Novem-
ber in Washington, D.C., to
mixed but generally favor-
able reviews and opened in
New England in February.
Whether Griffin matures
into a major film star or a
first-rate burglar, Des-
chanel believes that mak-
ing the picture was good
for him.
"I think he gained a lot
of self-respect. It gave him
confidence."

Stamp show In 1852
The earliest exhibition of
postage stamps as objects
worth collecting was held in
1852 by Phillip Vandermae-
len, a much -traveled geogra-
pher, in his museum in Brus-
sels, Belgium. In a picture
frame he had mounted "a
collection of postage stamps
for payment of postage in
use in the different countries
of the world."
