By ALAN L. GANSBERG
HOLLYWOOD - Actors
take roles in movies for a
variety of reasons, but for
KARL MALDEN, when
"Sting II" was offered, the
main reason was clear. He
wanted to work with
JACKIE GLEASON, as he
had been a Gleason fan for
as long as he could remem-
ber.
"Gleason is the best at
what he does," Malden
said. "I had'Thome big
scenes with him and they
were great. I judge an
actor by how well he
comes prepared, and Jack-
ie Gleason comes pre-
pared. I enjoyed the scenes
I played with him and I
can't say that about every
performer around today."
"Sting II" is aligned with
"The Sting" in that some of
the characters are the
same, if not the actors por-
traying them. Plus, the
goal is naturally the big
cons. Malden plays what he
calls "a Chicago hood who
went somewhere in Jersey
and made it big. Now he
thinks he's a great ladies'
man."
Although Malden also
has another picture that
should be out this year,
"Twilight Time," he picks
and chooses carefully. He
insisted he only did
"Twilight Time" because it
was going to be filmed in
Yugoslavia, home of his
ancestors. As he puts it, "I
wanted to find my Serbian
roots. It was fascinating.
They are a wonderful race
of people."
But a TV series would
not be something that Mal-
den craves.
"You tell me why I

%."''.
r
should do one again," he
said, noting that before the
"Streets of San Francisco"
he had never appeared on
the small screen at all.
"I'm too old for that
crap," he continued. "I
can't work when you get
scripts on Thursday to
shoot the scene on Friday.
Or where they're writing it
as you do it. With 'Streets' I
enjoyed the experience be -
"cause MANN MARTIN
was the type of producer
who wouldn't let that hap-
pen."
Malden is equally criti-
cal of other actors who he
thinks aren't always doing
their jobs.
"I see so many people
reading lines in rehears-
als," he remarked. "That's
mostly in television. In
films, they know their
lines, but they're waiting
for the director to tell
them what to do.
"I never go to see thei
rushes (the day's work on
film)," he continued. "When
I work on a part in a script
I imagine it as a certain
thing. If it's not there on
the screen at the end of a
day, I'd get upset and it
would affect the rest of my
performance."
Malden confided that he
has enjoyed the diversity of
characters he's played in
all media, and is not at all
upset that he was locked
into character roles be-
cause of the twice -broken
nose that is misshapen
today.
"They once told me that
I could be a leading man if
I had my nose fixed," he
said. "They said I had the
physique. But I didn't want
it. I didn't want leading
man parts."
TREAT WILLIAMS is
building muscles to play
the legendary fighter
"Dempsey" on the screen.
SALLY KELLERMAN will
also star.
SHIRLEY TEMPLE was
back in Hollywood and
mentioned that although
she is no longer chief of
protocol in Washington or
ambassador to Ghana, she
is on call by the White
House to train new ambas-
sadors. So far, she's given
key suggestions to more
than 100!
