Although simplistic and, at times, a little too black and white, the story illustrated the problems common to modern farmers, a group which often is ignored on national television. And if it helps to demonstrate those stumbling blocks in a realistic light, then so much the better. Gordon Pinsent, probably Canada's most famous television actor, portrayed the main character, a far- mer who finds himself backed up against the wall trying to cope with high operating costs and low market returns, The Pinsent character epitomized the frustration and hopelessness of the little Man against the big cor- poration, namely the bank. The tension mounts until Pinsent decides to battle the odds because farming is not a job to him, "It's my life." The- boldness of his character is offset by the woman Who portrayed his wife — the typical stalwart country woman with an edge of ._toughness. Belgrave native, 12 -year-old Patrick Cull, played the farmer's son and gave a suitable per- formance of a child afraid and uncertain about the future. If Pinsent is the hero, the bank manager is the obvious villain: young, un- sympathetic, city -born and educated, with no inkling of farm life and its obvious problems. This is "Ready for Slaughter's" biggest drawback, because it paints only two sides in the farm - bank issue without taking into consideration the other problems inherent, like a farmer going for too much too soon. A host of supporting players, including actor Booth Savage, make up the other members of the farm community who hand together to save their way of tfe by declaring all-out w•at n the hank through their arm survivalist organiza tion. On the whole. "Ready for Slaughter" presented a fairly accurate picture of farm life today, a refreshing change for a medium which either ignores farmers or portrays- them as hicks. Pinsent's flesh and blood characterization hopefully will cause a few people to sit lin erp nnflrpC legit ima e complaints. cath er than ,abeling all farmers is cry . ahies Tues., Mar. 22 8:00 Polka Dot Door 8:30 Flower Stories: The Secondhand Cat 8:45 Mister Rogers' Neigh- borhood 9:15 Report Canada 9:20 Readalong 3: Assist- ant, Assist, Kilometre, Driver, Driving 9:30 Finding Out: News- paper 1 9:45 Read All About It! 2: General Brock 10:00 Write On!: MacHenry Awful, Terrible, Nice 10:05 Parlez-moi: Sol's Dancing Lessons 10:15 See, Hear!: Country- side, Tunisia 10:20 The Body Works: Ex- ercise Program 12 10:30 Hattytown Tales: Car- ' rots for Mayor 10:40 Salut!, 10:50 Guess What?: Face Powder 11:00 Entre deux nuages 11:15 Les 100 tours de Centour 11:30 Music Box: Listen to the Music 11:45 Tell Me a Story: The Boy Who Went over the Mountain 11:55 Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings: Simon and the Flags 12:00 Outreach Ontario: Community Theatres: The Town Hall Players 12:30 Rough Cuts 1:00 Like No Other Place: Where- Have All the Cowboys Gone? 1:20 Basic Sports Skills: Badminton: Doubles— Teamwork 1:30 Report Canada 1:35 It's Your Move: The First Time 1 50 Today's Special: Costumes 2:30 Jeremy 2:45 Inside -Out: You Be- long 3:00 Trois pour la route 3:30 Trois pour la route 4:00 On aura tout vu! 4:30 Chorlton and the Wheelies: Chorlton and the Spinning Wheel 4:45 Noddy: Noddy Goes to School 5:00 Sesame Street 6:00 Polka Dot Door 6:30 Today's Special: Records 7:00 Kidsworld 7:30 Magic Shadows: Man with a Million.
