Game 5 at Barri
By Bill Johnston
Smarting from the over-
time loss in Wingham Friday
night, the Blues certainly
were up for the game in
Harriston Sunday, and they
showed no mercy as they
blanked the Royals 6-0 to
jump into a 3-2 lead in the
best -of -seven series.
The Blues hit the ice on the
fly and at 2:59 Brent Man-
derson was johnny-on-the-
spot to tap in Dan Mock's
Apt from the point. At 6:51
Murray Williams, on a
perfect shot, put the puck
just inside the post for
Harriston's second goal.
The Blues continued to
have things their way, and at
9:26 a shot from the point
that was going three feet
wide of the net banked off
Barry Richardson's hip and
into the net to give them a
commanding 3-0 lead.
The Blues raised the count
to five in the second period
on goals by Fred Hardy and
Wayne Williams, as they had
the puck contunually in the
Royals' end while their
goalie saw very little of the
black biscuit coming his
way. The Royals just didn't
have any penetrating power
against the solid Blue
defence and ever -skating
wings.
In the third things got a
little rough as both teams
took some solid runs at each
other, and the decisions — or
lack of rule — by the referee
saw very little hockey played
but a lot of lack of discipline
on both sides.
Royals' Jay MacLaurin
was hit by a solid one in the
centre ice zone and left the
game with a shoulder injury.
The lone goal of the period
came at 14:51, as Hugh
Clunas banged one in and
Harriston certainly deserved
the 6-0 win in this one.
WHISTLE STOPS—There
was no stopping the Blues in
this one. They were up for
the game after the overtime
loss, and completely
Tolton leads Oldtimers
with hat trick on weekend
The Wingham Oldtimers
traveled to Mississauga last
weekend for a pair of games
against their arch -rivals,
Cookstown. Wingham was
victorious in both matches.
Last Saturday night, Rob
Laurie scored with 12
seconds left in the game to
give Wingham a 2-1 win.
Laurie's goal was the result
of a picture pass from Jim
English who was stationed to
the left of the opposition's
net.
Wingham's first goal was
set up by the persistent
forechecking of Len
Houghton who stole the puck
behind the net, fed it to
Fraser Strong who, in turn,
hit Paul McKee in front of
the net. McKee made no
mistake in picking the
corner behind the Cookstown
goalie. The first star of the
game would have to go to
Tom Creeden in the
Wingham net, but the
defence played their best
game of the year.
Bill Tolton showed his
sharp eye around the
Cookstown net in the second
game, coming up with a hat
trick to lead Wingham to a 6-
2 victory. Laurie again had a
strong game with a goal and
three assists, while
Houghton and Tim Tolton
finshed off the scoring with
one each.
Once again, Creeden
showed brilliant form in net
for Wingham, even rushing
the puck up to the blueline on
one occasion.
The Rockers played two
good games with these
victories showing the team
effort and consistent back -
checking that coaches Doug
Neil and John Fryfogle have
been drilling them in.
04, SCOUTING NEWS
The March meeting of the
First Wingham Scout Group
committee was held at the
home of Marlene Leedham
Sunday evening.
Gerry Belanger chaired
the meeting. A thankyou not
was read from Wingham
Rintoul thanking the group
for inviting them to attend
the parent and son banquet.
Mrs. Rintoul keeps track of
all the money and badges for
the Scouts.
The group committee was
most pleased with the at-
tendance at the banquet.
Blake Evans, guest speaker,
gave an excellent presen-
tation for all age levels of
boys. The church parade was
well -attended at Sacred
Heart Feb. 20. The boys had
a fun night when they went to
Vanastra to swim in
February. An excellent
attendance was present to
enjoy skating at the arena
last Saturday night. The
Brownies, Guides and Path-
finders joined the boys for.
this event.
The invitational ]tub Kar
Race will be held at the
Wingham Public School
April 10, beginning at 10 a.m.
The public is most welcome
to attend this event.
It was reported that 12
Scouts are taking the gun
club course which began last
Tuesday. Phillip Massey has
become a new Cub leader,
replacing Wilson Perrin.
Two new leaders, Brent and
Phillip Foxton, have been
invested as new Scout
leaders.
A district meeting will be
held in Ripley March 20. It
was decided the paper drive
will be held May 7 and it was
felt the paper might have to
be stored until fall to get a
full load.
Since the Scouts are again
low in funds, it was decided
that the group obtain two
tables at the flea market
being held April 30 and that a
stencil be sent home with
each boy asking for
donations.
Due to the Easter holiday
falling on the group com-
mittee's regular meeting
night, it will meet April 10.

dominated the play. They
seemed to be in the Royals'
end the biggest part of the
game.
The Berfelz boys, Bill and
Paul, just never stopped
skating and at times while
killing penalties it almost
appeared Harriston had the
man advantage.
Six 'different Blues had
goals in this one, with the big
man, Dan Mock, 'having a
big day with three assistk.
Blue goalie Ralph Reeves
had an easy time of it as he
chalked up his first shutout
of the season.
The Royals certainly came
up with a lack -lustre effort
as they just didn't have the
zip required to upset that
loaded Harriston lineup.
On the whistle for this
game was Grand Valley's
big Al Dawe in the black and
white and never right. He
just didn't have control as
both teams used a flurry of
stickwork and excessive
charging. The Blues never
missed a chance to take a
run at Royal blueliner Gord
Kinahan, but he just kept
bouncing back and was
certainly the best in the
Wingham brigade in this
loss.
Game 6 was played last
night in Wingham and the
seventh game, if necessary,
goes at Harriston Friday
night at 8:30.
Legion Pee Wees
eliminate Clinton
The Wingham Legion Pee
Wees downed Clinton eo last
Tuesday night at the
Lockridge Memorial Arena.
The win eliminated Clinton
from further play in the
WOAA playoffs. Clinton won
the opening game of the
series 8-4 in overtime, but
Wingham won the next two
games 3-1 and 4-0, thus
winning the best of three
series, two games to one.
It was a total team victory,
as Wingham held Clinton to
only eight shots on goal.
Wingham's defence played
an excellent game, by
paying close attention to
Clinton's Devon Colquhoun.
The Wingham forwards not
only displayed a strong fore -
checking game, but helped
out the defence by putting
together an even stronger
backchecking effort.
Although not overworked,
Wingham's goalie Murray
Foxton turned in two or three
key saves to record the
shutout. Captain Brett
Martin led Wingham with
two goals, while Paul Brophy
and Bill Kinahan added
singles. In the assist depart-
ment, Brophy, Rick Leach-
man, John MacD4nald,
Terry Daer, Paul Edwards,
Jason Moore and Jason
Ducharme, added one each.
Wingham now will meet
Seaforth in the league finals.
Game one of the best of three
is Sunday in Wingham at 5
p.m. Game two is in Seaforth
Monday at 7:30 p.m. and
game three, if necessary,
will be played Tuesday in
Wingham at 6:30 p.m..

ticipated in the Eveready

Last Saturday morning,
the Tykes downed Listowel 3-
0. Wingham's goalies,
Andrew Gibson and Matthew

hard shots and won the
shutout. During the first
period, Murray MacLeod

the opposition. The .first
period ended in a 0-0 tie.
After much hard work,
Brad Hunter and Jonathon
Lane each scored for
Wingham in the second
period and Lane clinched the
game with a goal in the third.
Saturday evening, the
Wingham boys met Mount
Forest in a hotly -contested
match which ended in a 0-0,
tie. Here Elmslie, Wing -
ham's goalie, proved himself
against the Mount Forest of-
fence. Mike Tiffin joined
Lane and Cameron to put
pressure on the opposition.
Brad Hunter, Andrew Forest
and Todd Harrison each
played a strong game in
which they had to skate off
the Mount Forest players.
Ryan Deyell proved his
versatility by teaming up
with MacLeod on defence
and, along with Skinn and
'Brendan Magee, formed an
impenetrable defence for
Wingham. The final score of
0-0 was the climax of a hard-
fought battle for the boys on
each team.
Sunday evening, the Tykes
faced off against Harriston.
Deyell and Elmslie stopped
many hard shots on goal and
each boy can be proud of the
way he stood up under the
pressure. The game
probably was the most ex-
citing the boys have ever
played.
MacLeod cleared the puck
again and again, while
Magee drove it up the
boards. Jonathon Balzer and
Tiffin checked the Harriston
players and stopped them in
their tracks. Barton
Cameron worked the corners
and Poulin kept the
Harriston players on their
toes with his tenacious play.
Clemment Wai fought his
way through Harriston's
defence to set up plays and
centre the puck. Lane scored
the first Wingham goal,
assisted by Cameron and
flunter's hard work paid off
when he scored Wingham's
second marker, assisted by
Hodgins and Gibson. The
final score was Wingham,
two and Harriston, three.

The Wingham Kinsmen
Bantams were eliminated by
Kingsville from OMHA
playoffs two games straight
last weekend.
The first game, played last
Saturday, saw Kingsville
walk away with a 5-2 win.
Wingham opened the scoring
with a goal by Paul Tolton,
assisted by Jeff Walden and
David Wheeler, but
Kingsville came back with
three goals before the first
period ended.
The second period saw
Wingham's Bill Cameron
score, assisted by Jamie
Robinson and Jason Goodall,
but Kingsville scored two
more to make the score 5-2.
The third period was
scoreless with Wingham
having several good scoring
opportunities on which they
were unable to capitalize.
Sunday's game in
Kingsville saw the Kings
outscore Wingham 9-5. In the

Midgets eliminate
Clinton in WOAA
Midget playoffs
The Wingham Midgets
skated to a 5-1 win over a
hard -checking Clinton team
Sunday afternoon to
eliminate Clinton from the
WOAA semi-finals.
Byron Thompson scored
unassisted at 2:13 of the first
frame to give Wingham a 1-0
lead. The Midgets then took
a 2-0 lead on a goal by Paul
Robinson, assisted by Steve
Nicholson, at 6:02.
Clinton got one back before
Mark Foxton scored,
assisted by Paul Kenyon, to
make the lead 3-1. Robinson
got his second goal with only
six seconds remaining in the
period to make it 4-1 after
one.
Only one goal was scored
in the second period, and it
was by Nicholson at 7:25,
assisted by Robinson and
Bill Haines. There was no
scoring in the third period.
ICE CHIPS—There was
some fine bodychecking by
the defensive team of Paul
Robinson, Byron Thompson,
Rob Willis and Doug Wood,
together with a strong game
by goalie Mitch Braun,
holding Clinton to just one
goal.
Mitchell and
Wingham tie
Mitchell tied its WOAA
quarter -final playoff series
with the Wingham Midgets
with a 5-4 win last Monday
night in Mitchell.
Mitchell had a 2-0 lead at
the end of the first period.
Wingham tied the score on
goals by Brett Cameron
from Jim Dennis at 8:39 of
the second and Paul
Robinson from Bill Haines
and Tim Brown at 11:19.
Mitchell regained the lead
at 13:51 of the second and
increased its margin to two
goals at 3:09 of the third. But
once again, Wingham fought
back to tie the game at four,
on goals by Cameron from
Robinson and Steve
Nicholson from Cameron.
However, Mitchell won the
game on a goal scored with
only 32 seconds remaining in
the game. The final score
was Mitchell, five, acid
Wingham, four.
Brownie corner
By Shannon Robinson
We played some games.
Then we went to our Sixes
and did inspection and we
marked our books to see if
everybody was there and
brought their money. We
went into the Brownie Ring
and said our promise, law
and motto and then we gave
our money. In Pow Wow we
talked about coming events
and gave out badges. Brown
Owl gave Baker's Badges to
Maria Gibbons and Erin
Whiteley. We are going to a
skating party at the arena.
Group A caught up on their
Brownie books and Group B

The Square 624-718411
scored five goals while
Robinson scored Wingham's
only goal, assisted by
Bloemberg and Goodall. In
the second period,
Wingham's Tolton came
back with a goal assisted by
Sean Kieffer, then Robinson
scored his second goal of the
game, assisted by Cameron
and Goodall.
However, the Kings came
back with another goal to
make the score 6-3 at the end
of the second.
The Kings added another
goal at the first of the third
period, but Shawn Fryfogle
scored Wingham's fourth
goal, assisted by Murray
Houghton. The Kings came
back with another goal
before Tolton scored his
second goal of the game.
Kingsville added its ninth
goal at 12:15 to end the
scoring.
Kingsville's Dean Lafleur
was the big gun for his team,
scoring seven goals in the
two games, and if it wasn't
for the excellent play of
David Wheeler (assigned to
Lafleur during the second
and third periods), he
probably would have scored
more goals. Out of
frustration, Lafleur sat in
the penalty box for four
penalties. Kingsville had
seven penalties in the match,
compared to Wingham's
four.
A SIDELINE VIEW—The
Wingham boys all gave 100
per cent during this series,
but just couldn't get the
breaks around the net. They
played excellent hockey and
accepted the loss with class.
Now, they start the next
round of WOAA playoffs
against Seaforth, Wed-
nesday night in Seaforth.
Senior ringette team
eliminated on weekend
The Wingham Opti -Mrs.
ringette team was
eliminated from playoff
action on the weekend by
Goderich.
After winning the first
game 8-5 in Wingham, the
girls traveled to Goderich
last Saturday morning and
lost by a 12-5 count. Goal
scorers for Wingham were
Lori Gavreluk and Maureen
Beattie with two each and
Sandy Morrison wfth one.
Assisting on the goals were
Morrison with two, Beattie,
Gavreluk and Leesa Cook
with one each. The girls just
couldn't get it together and
came up flat in this game.
Sunday night's game in
Wingham saw Goderich
outscore Wingham 6-5 in a
close, well -played game that
could have gone either way,
with Wingham just missing
on a good scoring op-
portunity in the last seconds
of the game.
Gavreluk scored three
goals for Wingham, while
Julaine Adams and Ellen
Rodger each added one.
Assists went to Leah Kulas,
Cook and Morrison. Cook
played a strong defensive
game and all the team gave
its best.
This loss ended the season
for the seniors. Team
members are: Vickie
Belanger, Lynne Braun, Lori
Gavreluk, Maureen Beattie,
Julaine Adams, Leah Kulas,
Ellen Rodgera Heidi Strong,

Foxton scores three
in a win over Clinton
Mark Foxton scored three
goals to lead the Wingham
Midgets to a 6-2 victory over
Clinton in the opening game
of their WOAA semi-final
series.
Foxton got his first goal of
the game at the 11:01 mark,
assisted by Dwayne Jenkins.
Only two minutes later
Foxton got his second goal,
assisted by Tim Brown and
Paul Kenyon. When the first
period was over, Wingham
led 2-0.
Steve Nicholson scored at
4:59 of the second frame,
assisted by Foxton, before
Clinton scored two unan-
swered goals to narrow the
gap to 3-2 at the end of two
periods.
Only 46 seconds into the
third period, Foxton com-
pleted his hat trick with an
assist from Kenyon. Rob
Willis slapped the puck past
the Clinton goalie at 11:90,
assisted by Kenyon and
Foxton. The final goal of the
game was scored two
minutes later by Paul
Robinson, with assists from
Kenyon and Willis, to make
the final score 6-2.
ICE CHIPS—Robert
Schistad played a great
game in the net for
Wingham. Dwayne Jenkins
showed he wasn't afraid of
anythingia with some
aggressive forechecking.
On the injury list, top
scorer Brett Cameron is out
for a couple of games with an
injured ankle. Jim Dennis is
