Eubie Blake must surely have died with a smile on his face. Five days before his death, Eubie had been the recipient off "flowers for the living", alert enough to understand and appreciate the glowing tributes paid him by peers and fans all over the country, who were honoring him on his 100th birthday. He was ill at home with a bout of pneumonia and it was from com- plications which came as a result of the pneumonia that Blake died. Blake started to play the piano when he was a little lad. His parents gave him music lessons in the classics but he preferred ragtime and could sit down at the piano and play those songs by ear. He composed more than 300 songs, among them old favorites like "I'm Just Wild About Harry" and "Memories of You" and performed on some of the biggest stages in the U.S. with some of the greatest conductors. When he was 96, he appeared on Broadway and won rave reviews from critics. Blake and his talent did a great deal for fellow black performers, especially on the Broadway stage. We can't mourn his passing. We do feel grateful that he lived to hear the tributes of an adoring entertainment world, on 100 years of living. We thank him for songs that made the world a happier place. 0-0-0 The few peeks I've had of The Paul Anka Show have convinced me that Paul is out of his element in this undertaking produced by the CBC at Vancouver. There has been lots of money spent on this series, on the star himself, the lavish sets and the splashy costumes. But the show does not even come close to expectations. Paul is no host, he doesn't know the scripts and his contact with audience is lost because off his contact with cue -cards. He has performed in alot of clubs and woos a live audience, at the expense of the TV audience. Paul is not singing as well, either, and even if you love the guy, a steady half-hour of him is just too much. Methinks he should stick to what he does best, writing songs for others! TEASERS By W.
