The function. of the skin and haircoat is to protect the body. -If a .problem : develops in the skin area it will very significantly affect the dog's general health and happi- ness. Bacterial s ;:n diseases — sometimes red to as pyoderma , most com- monly ca by the staphy- lococcus and stretptococcus bacteria. Any area of the body may be affected but usually areas around the face or on the undersurface of the body are most susceptible to this type of infection. Diagnosis is usually made by the veter- inarian on the basis of the appearance of the problem area, but occasionally it may require culture of the area to find the cause and perhaps blood tests and biopsies to confirm the nature of the problem. In general, treat- ment of these kinds of in- fections will involve very thorough cleaning of the area — usually shaving the hair and using antiseptic soaps to wash it. Antibiotics are—the most important drug to help in solving the prob- lem. The most common fungus infection to bother dogs is often referred to as ring- wortn. The fungi that can cause the problem usually live on the hair of the af- fected animal. Various tests can be used to determine whether this problem is present but the most reliable way is to collect some hairs from the suspected area and attempt to grow the fungi on a special culture slate. Treatment is important both for the dog's sake and to pre- vent humans who contact it from the possibility of de- veloping the infection. Allergies in dogs are simi- lar to the allergies that people can suffer from. The main sign a dog will show is a . very intense itchi- ness. If parasites are ruled out as a cause of the dog's constantscratching and bit- ing at itself, then the likeli- hood is that the dog has allergic skin disease. Con- firming the diagnosis may involve the use of intra- dermal skin tests, skin biop- sies or evaluating the re- sponse made by the dog to treatments of the problem. Hormonal skin disorders can sometimes be complex problems in the dog. The thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pituitary glands, testicles and ovaries all pro- duce hormones which in- fluence skin and haircoat health. Hair loss, changes in the appearance of the skin, as well,as signs of change in other b dy unctions are usually characteristic in the hormone imbalance prob- lems. With the help of the veter- inarian, modern medicines and most importantly, the ongoing care provided by the pet's owner, most skin dis- eases are able to be cured or at least satisfactorily con- trolled. WHAT IS STOL? What exactly does Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) mean? Why is it important? A standard air- port runway is anywhere from 1,500 m to 12,000 m be- cause Most commercial jets need the length to take off and land safely. A STOL turboprop aircraft, pioneered in Canada by de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited, needs only 460 m of runway to operate. This becomes important in many communities, especi- ally in remote areas where the local airport facilities cannot accommodate the larger high-performance aircraft. Further, a STOL aircraft can land on "stub" runways used for prospect- ing, mining or exploration projects. Use of STOL planes is also advantageous in densely populated urban areas, where it is necessary to reduce the noise level. The Liss' of a downtown air ter- minal for short -haul flights is not only a convenience for passengers, but may fre- quently help to diminish con- gestion at the main airport. PRODUCT ONS'.
