Crossroads—Feb. 16, 1983—Page 7
By JEFF WARD
X throws an excellent
roll which allows him to
enter and hit at the same
time. After playing the 5, X
has four choices with the 6.
The two choices that hit
a second man are much
betterl than the two that
don't, so X can reject the
latter two.
But should he hit on the
14 -point or the 7 -point?
Although either hit is a
good play, X should press
his attack by hitting on the
7 -point. When you can hit
two opponent's men with
the same roll, the opponent
is almost completely help-
less. Depending on the
strength of your home
board, the opponent usual-
ly has a tough time just
coming off the bar with
both men on his next turn.
This is the time to go for
an all-out assault which
will lead to a quick victory
and quite possibly a gam-
mon. Such an assault is
called a "blitz."
In a blitz, the attacking
player aims for a rapid
close-out of at least two op-
ponent's men. The object is
to make home board points
as fast as possible while
preventing the opponent
from making a single one.
The latter is especially
important because if the
opponent anchors (makes a
point in the attacker's
home board), a close-out is
no longer possible and the
blitz has failed.
To prevent the opponent
from anchoring, you must
hit him whenever he comes
in, even if this means leav-
ing a blot in your home
board.
You must also try to
make home board points as
fast as possible. Each addi-
tional home board point
you own , makes it that
much more difficult for
your opponent to enter.
When part of a roll can-
not be used to hit or make
a point, it is best to bring
another spare man within
range of the home board.
In the diagram, X goes
from the bar to a blitz at-
tack in one roll. Hitting on
the 7 -point is the key be-
cause it brings another
checker into direct play.
Not only does the checker
occupy a new point, giving
X extra ways to make the
4-, 2- and 1 -points, but it is
also immune from being
hit.
Notice that nothing 0
-can toll — even his best
doubles — hits on the 7 -
point.
Points are numbered 1
to 24, starting with X's
home board at the lower
left. A move, for example,
from the 7 -point to the 3 -
point is written 7/3. /3e
means that a man w s hit
on the 3 -point. 7/3( eans
that two men were moved
to the 3 -point.

Being a secretary
is highly stressful
Being a secretary is high-
ly stressful. Says Dr. Dale
Masi, a professor in the Uni-
versity of Maryland's School
of Social Work, "Studies in-
dicate that secretaries rep-
resent the second-highest
category of stress-related
occupations today (laborers
such as coalminers and con-
struction workers are first.)"
