Let's
Talk
By REV. LII TRUMAN
Few people know that
the severest strain in test-
ing an automobile is driv-
ing the car at high speed
over what looks like
smooth pavement.
You would think that a
rocky, rutted road would
be the most difficult. But
high speed over what looks
like a smooth highway sets
up highfrequency f vibra-
tions which quickly loosens
bolts or cause what looks
like a good piece of steel to
fail.
Tension, internal agita-
tion and moving too fast
even though for all appear-
ances it seems to be done
smoothly, have no less ef-
fect in causing hidden
weaknesses to break a
man.
"Why I thought old Joe
was as solid as the Rock of
Gibraltar, so how come
he's sick — had a nervous
breakdown — took his own
life?" Or all the other
symptoms which mean the
same thing.
In a physics lab I saw a
demonstration of sound on
a piece 'of glass. The sound
was not loud to my ears,
but the frequency was in-
creased until the pane
shattered into a thousand
splinters.
If you think that tension
or other forms of inner vi-
bration does not affect the
highly organized human
personality or our bodies in
much the same way, you
have had a very protected
life.
In his book, "Nerves,"
Alfred Brown confirms this
process. He writes that in
the thalamus (innerbrains)
is where we have emotions,
where we feel love, fear,
jealousy, hate, rage, etc. By
very practical proof,
Brown shows that the emo-
tional crisis in the
thalamus is the cause of
ulcers, many forms of high
blood pressure, often the
source for heart irregulari-
ty, and other evidence of
illness.
Brown further states
that there is the forebrain
(cerebrum) where we ana-
lyze, think and decide. The
forebrain recognizes gen-
eral situations • and sends
its findings to the inner -
brain for action and feel-
ing. The innnerbrain re-
ports the situation back to
the forebrain in terms of
emotion, good or bad.
Brown's summary is: if
you want to enjoy good'
health, you first must get
right with your innerbrain.

Robert Louis Stevenson,
deathly ill, wrote these
words in his diary: "Quiet
minds cannot be perplexed
or frightened. They go on
in fortune or misfortune at
their own quiet pace like
the ticking of a clock dur-
ing a thunderstorm."
He had made peace with
his own emotional life, and
each time I see a man who
becomes irritated because
he has missed an elevator,
or someone takes his life in
his hands trying to beat a
red light, or a parent who
has lost all patience with
his children, I pray for
them that they might make
peace with their own ner-
vous system, and that the
marvelous machinery
called our brain and body
which our Maker has given
to els might be used con-
structively to the ends of
joy, happiness, and growth
and fulfillment.
Fireflies taste bad;
this saves them
Fireflies have managed to
avoid extinction because
they taste bad to predators,
says Dr. Joseph Bonaventu-
ra of the Marine Biomedical
Center, Beaufort, N.C.
He placed an extract of
freeze-dried fireflies in
tanks of seawater containing
foot -long Atlantic sharp -
nosed sharks. Within min-
utes the sharks struggled to
get away, and when they
couldn't they became para-
lyzed and died.
