James A. Strong
was Howick native
A native of Howick
Township who lived a full life
and served his country well
in a number of high
positions, James A. Strong of
Roanoke, Virginia, passed
away Febru 7 in Virginia
following a.. engthiy illness.
He was in his 82nd year.
Mr. Strong was a sonpf the
late William George Strong
and Eliza Ellen Warrell. In
his early adult life, he was
the employed
y Bank of
Montreal, then he left
Canada to become Canadian
ambassador in the Argentine
for a number of years. He
also served in Panama for
several years.
Mr. Strong is survived by
his wife, the former Phyllis
Loomis; ' one brother,
Wellesley Strong of Gorrie;
and several nieces and
nephews. He was
predeceased by two sisters,
Mrs. Telford (Elfreda)
Montgomery and Miss
Margaret Ellen Strong; and
one brother, John Whitney
Strong. Funeral service was
held in Richmond, -Virginia,
followed by cremation, with,
burial later in Gorrie
Cemetery.
Mrs. Evelyn Hart
was Howick native
A native of Howick
Township and resident of
Listowel for the past several
years, Mrs. Evelyn Hart of
241 Inkerman St., Listowel,
passed away Thursday,
February 10, in Listowel
Memorial Hospital. She was
in her 78th year and death
followed -a brief illness.
The former Lottie Evelyn
Hislop, she was born in
Howick, a daughter of the
late Benjamin Hislop and
Susan Savage. She was
predeceased by one brother
and one sister. Her husband,
William' George Hart,
predeceased her in 1970.
Left to mourn her passing
are two sons, Lyle of
Wroxeter and Bill of
Oshawa; six grandchildren
and two great-grand-
children. There are three
sisters, Mrs. Annie Griffith
of Brussels, Mrs. Cliff
(Eileen) Marks of Wroxeter
and Mrs. Leila Sanderson of
Rosetown, Saskatchewan;
and one brother, George
Hislop of Brussels.
Mrs. Hart rested at the
Gorrie Chapel of M. L. Watts
Funeral Homes where
friends paid their respects
until Saturday, February 12,
when complete funeral and
committal service was
conducted at 2:30 -by Rev.
Lloyd Martin. Final resting
place will be Wroxeter
Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers
were Glen McKercher,
Gordon Hislop, Jim
Robertson, Bruce Cham-
bers, Wallace Nixon, Adrian
Poirier and Everett San-
derson.
Earl Underwood
was war veteran
A veteran of World War I,
Earl Havelock Underwood of
Gorrie, passed away Mon-
day, February 7, at the
Wingham and District
Hospital.
Born August 5, 1887, in
Howick Township, Mr.
Underwood farmed for many
years. He was predeceased
by his parents, Joseph
Underwood and Mary Miller,
and two brothers, Edward
and Jack.
Left to mourn are his wife,
the former Violet Day; one
son, Jack of Guelph; two
grandchildren and one great-
granddaughter. Be was
Predeceased by one son,
Barry.
Complete funeral and
committal service was held
Wednesday, February 9, at
the Gorrie Chapel of M. L.
Watts Funeral Homes,
conducted at 2:30 by Rev.
William Gray of St.
.Stephen's and Trinity
Anglican Churches. Spring
interment will follow in
Gorrie Cemetery.

pital, London, Edwin J.
Litt, in his 87th year. Sur-
vived by his beloved wife,
Freda, eight daughters
and two sons; 27 grand-
children and 29 great-
