I'mto feel comfort- able with wenty-four hour time — a adjustment com- parable to metric shock.. It is, for instance, hard to learn that you weigh only 55 kilo- grams without careening off your diet. , - It is hard not to crawl back under the covers when the radio announcer tells you it is ten Celsius degrees below zero. It is hard not to think of 1964 as the year of the Beatles when in reality, it is the time a plane is leaving - upon which you must be. Since I am about to spend two weeks living on twenty- four hour time, I have been practising it here at home. This lends a sharply impera- tive tone to everything we do. "Get outa that bath - f hand room," I bark. "It's 21:20 and I want to wash my hair." "Have you shaved yet?" I ask the Squire. "I see signs of a 17:00 o'clock shadow." Happy hour is at 17:15 and dinner is at 18:00 and at 23:20 I put my teeth in a glass and call it a night. I don't know who invented twenty-four hour time, but without it wars and revolu- tions would start untidily., Also people would keep missing trains, which is just as well because if the trains a themselves were unsure about whether a stated time was ante or post meridian, there would be collisions a- plenty. There is nothing compli- cated about twenty-four hour time. You simply add twelve onto any hour that comes after lunch and then tack the minutes on the end. School goes in at 13:00 hours (one o'clock) and gets out at 15:30 (half -past three). By 16:10 the little jackals are home, pawing through the re- frigerator. Many of them will have to be driven to music lessons at 17:00 hours. The only problem is that all this adding takes time. By the time I look at my watch and decode the relative posi- tions of big and little hand to make fourteen minutes to eight, then add eight and twelve (secretly ticking off my fingers) , and then deduct fourteen from sixty (six and four are ton; borrow one; four and one is five) to get 19:46, it is no longer 19:46. It's 20:04, and whatever was supposed to happen at 19:46 is history. Some people have watches with twenty-four hour time all marked off around the edges and this must make everything simpler. Then all you have to remember is whether you've had lunch or not. I am pleased to be learning this new skill and I expect to be treated with a lot more re- spect as soon as I get the hang of announcing the time with the dry precision of Alec Guiness playing an interna - Craft talk By Louisa Rush This week brought a letter from a reader inquiring about lampshades and did I have any crochet patterns. To dress up a Tiffany lamp- shade, I have instructions for a pretty braiding and a deep fringe on Leaflet No. 7453. Another all-over lacey design in crochet gives a very pretty effect when the light is on, on Leaflet No. 7564. Both of these designs can be helpful in making a shade last just a little bit longer by disguising the soiled spots. Leaflet No. 7704 has the instructions for the bobble fringe which will give a shade a new lease on life. No. 7720 is a crochet shade cover with Butterflies, and the matching table mats are on Leaflet No. 7706. Of course you can make a lampshade cover of motifs. 13y leaving out the centre motifs, you can work the re- quired number for the depth of your wire frame. The motifs will give an irregular edge, and it's very pretty when the light is on. My friend has one worked like this inher dining room and I have always admired it. My Leaflet No. 6962 would be good to use for this idea. My friend in Vancouver writes to tell me that her church group raised over $600 for the Christmas Bur- eau as well as making 320 toques, 310 pairs of mitts, stuffed toys and many other items to be distributed to the needy at Christmas. The group meets once a week, working towards the one big sale just before the festive season. The lady who lives in the. house behind me, and to whom I give all my samples, enjoys making doll clothes. Unfortunately she doesn't have children of her own but realizes the joy that clothes forr a doll bring, so all year she makes these tiny gar- ments, putting them up in outfits and she must make literally hundreds. Having done this for the past 12 years, her fame has spread so she doesn't need to adver- tise. Come the first week of December, people are beat- ------ing a path to her door. All proceeds go to the Cancer Fund. It's been a great help to me to have a little work to take along while waiting at doc- tors' offices or f r radiation treatments, every day for five weeks, and it. would have been such a wale of time had I not brought along some crochet. I'm happy to say, I • • Ashley, Barry & Darlene Miller. Listowel •J,tiu • ,:4y Studio will be closed February 1 - 28 inclasite for renonationb. The folks in the grocery score will surely snap to attention when I tell them I'd like my things delivered before 14:30 please. And I can't wait to tell my son I'll pick him up at the ski hill sharp at 16:15. That will, I think, make him quite nervous. I plan to add other habits to my persona which will mark me as a well -travelled citizen of the world rather than as someone who grew up in a place called Cold- water. I will eat with my knife and fork in the hands for which they were intended, instead of eternally switch- ing back and forth in the North American style. I will wear a tam. I will cross my sevens. I will •, learn to say "wire- less" "petrol" and "cin- ema". And if I meet you on the street I will kiss you on both cheeks. Watch for me. It is a far, far better world to which 1 go, where the hours are allowed to go out alone without the accom- paniment of Auntie Meridian or her husband Post. There's only one thing I'm going to miss in this efficient and ra- tional new world, and that's the After Eight dinner mint. I love them, but I just can't face them that early in the morning.
