Fri ewer Crossroads -Feb. 9, 1983 -Page 7 Bcickgamn n By W W'rd By JEFF WARD In this position, the two armies of checkers have separated, and now it_ lis just a matter of who can bear off his checkers first. Typically in such racing positions, the winner is largely determined by who rolls the highest numbers. However, there is an ele- ment of skill in racing posi- tions (other than rolling "skill") when the doubling cube is used. The proper time to double, and whether a position is a take or a pass, are often not at all obvious. The obvious cases are those in which one player has a large lead in the race. Either his checkers are much more advanced, he has more off the board, or both. These games are usually • resolved quickly by the leader doubling and the trailer passing. The more difficult cube decisions arise in the clos- er races. In the diagram, for example, X and 0 each have 11 men left. For X to bear off all his men, he will need dice rolls totaling at least 38. (Six fora man on the 6 -point, five for a man on the 5..point, etc.). This is called X's "pip count." X also has the big advan- tage of being on roll. O's pip count is 42. In the back- gammon race, a higher pip count means you are be- hind. In positions like this one, there is a formula that will give you the correct cube d-ec>ii on for each player in almost all cases. Take X's pip count, add 10 percent (call this XP), and compare it with O's pip count (call this OP). If X is still ahead (XP is less than OP), X should still double. If XP is equal to or as much as 2 more than OP, X should still double. If XP exceeds OP by more than 2, X should not double. 0 should accept when he is even or ahead (OP equal to or less than XP). When OP is as much as 2 more than XP, 0 should still ac- cept. But if 0 is further be- hind (OP exceeds XP by more than 2), 0 should pass. In the diagrammed posi- tion, XP is 41.8 and OP is 42. Since XP is less 'than OP, X should double. Since OP is just barely greater than XP, 0 should accept. Points are numbered 1 to 24, starting with X's home board at the lower left. A move, for example, from the 7 -point to the 3 - point is written 7/3. 7/31 means that a man was bit on the 3 -point. 7/3(2) means that two men were moved to the 3 -point. 1 2 • A • • 7 • •1. 1112 964414 X Nubia 1 Skaeld 0 Amse1t "ADVENTURE ON THE MATTERHORN" The exciting story of a triple exploit unfolds as Global Television returns the series The Intrepid Ones on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 10 p.rn. This evening's episode con- centrates on J. M. Boivin's "Adventure on the Matter- horn". Al 4,978 metres, the Matterhorn is one of the most scenic of the 4,000 Alps and explorer 'Boivin saw most of the terrain when he skied down the Mountain's East Face, climbed the North Face, and then hang glided from the summit. Bea utifully..photographed with many breath -taking shots, the helicopters were used to achieve some of the shots.
