But of late fingers have been doing something more than walk- ing. They are in the news be - cause they have been talk- ing. And because they have been talking obscenely. In London, Ontario on the Thursday before Christmas a 19 year old youth found that out to his sorrow.when, after a Provincial Court Judge had sentenced his young brother to six months in jail, he showed his displeasure by holding uphis middle finger as he was about to leave the courtroom. The judge promptly had him hauled back. "Seven days in jail for that!" the judge told him. And that seven days in - chided Christmas. The Crown Prosecutor later commented that the. youth had made the mistake of giving the judge "the Tru- deau finger" . Now the Prosecutor didn't say as much but it seems that while our Prime Minis- ter is permitted to show anger and contempt by pointing his middle finger to the North Star, such liberty is not extendedo less not- able individuals. Particular- ly when they are in the pre- sence of a judge. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems to me there is some- thing ominous about both of those upraised fingers. To many Canadians Mr. Tru- deau's was not just a lewd gesture. It was a sign of his disdain for those who dis- a agree with his attitude as well as his politics, and if the opinion polls are at all accur- ate, his critics now constitute a sizeable majority of us. Could be of course that Mr. Trudeau's gesture was pre- cipitated by nothing more than thoughtless impulse or momentary exasperation. But to far too manyna- dians that angry finger as sign language which i di cated the disregard our Prime Minister and his government has shown so often of late toward the will of the majority. The imposi- tion of metric, for instance, without a single word of par- liamentary debate about it,• and in spite of massive pub- lic resentment, or the PM's telling us with a shrug that elevating friend Pitfield to the Senate really `shouldn't concern us, or the increasing tendency of his government -to legislate by Orders -in - Council and Cabinet, and to govern by bureaucracy while our duly elected Mein - hers of Parliament become virtually powerless. Now Mr. Trudeau un- doubtedly justifies all this by believing so firmly that he is right and that we the critical majority, aren't smart enough to see that. That we are dead wrong. What he seems to overlook is that in a democracy such as ours we, the people, have a sovereign right to be wrong. And surely history has proven time and again that when those who seek to govern without re- gard to the will of the people, danger lies ahead for them. as well,as for their country. As for the London youth, well raising his obscene finger for the judge's benefit Crossroads—Feb. 9, 1983—Page 5 was no doubt contempt of court. But it could have been more than that. Maybe it was an expression of defi- ance at a system in which, to the little man, the cards seem always stacked against him. He now inhabits a world where the great people can do:. pretty much what they will to those beneath, and that there's damn little that „ can be done about it. Not till next election, at least, and even then there's no voting that man defrock a judge. Fingers are amply capable of a nobler sign language, but before the average Cana- dian will feel like greeting 1983 with thumbs up or mak- ing Churchill's determined V for victory, there must sure- ly be an end to this indecent exposure of middle fingers both from the man on the street and from the great people. And the first to recognize this fact should be our Prime Minister and his government. A,Cmciiirt • • • • • • • • • • lila shin g Value o FAB DETERGENT 12 L BOX Limit 2 per customer. In fact, all you need do to bring Rebecca's face to mind is remember the back cover of virtually any women's magazine where she appeared as the fa- mous Breck girl ... the lady who epitomized beau- tiful hair and unquestion- able beauty. Yes, the face (and hair!) of that famous Breck girl (on TV as well as in maga- zines) belongs to Rebecca Holden, whom you may also recall as having had guest appearances on "Taxi," "Magnum P.I.," "Quincy," "Three's Compa- ny" and "Happy Days," as well as appearing in liter- ally hundreds of television commercials. And when a letter from Sue B. of Altoona, Pa., came in asking, "How can TV .,and movie stars have time for good grooming with their hectic sched- ules?" — I couldn't think of a busier or prettier Super Beauty to answer that question than Rebecca. "I learned a lot about the importance of preventa- tive hair care while I was a Breck girl," says Rebecca, "because hair was the focal point of the ads and it had to look good all the time. "What I discovered was that you can really prevent damage from occurring by simply having your hair trimmed at regular inter- vals. If you have 'split ends or dry or hard -to -manage hair," she continues, "a trimming every four to six weeks will keep your hair healthy, plus add body and make it easier to manage." Rebecca suggests you also condition your hair every time you wash it, with no exceptions, and to find several products you like and alternate them. "Your hair can build up a tolerance to certain prod- ucts," she says, "and no 'Matter how good those products are, their effec- tiveness will decrease over time, if you use them all. the time. But if you use three or four different products, especially condi- tioners, and alternate them, your hair will stay in shape longer and will be easier to control." About to appear in her first major motion picture role ("The Last Hero" for Embassy Pictures), Rebec- ca has very little time to herself, so to compensate she bas found one beauty routine that benefits every- thing from her hair to her skin Ito her figure. "What I recently discov- ered," says this super beau- ty, "is an anti -gravity de- vice where you literally hang by your feet. I do it REBECCA HOLDEN ... Learned a lot about hair care when she was a Breck Girl. every morning and the re- sults in a short amount of time were just amazing. "All day long," she ex- plains "gravity is pushing us down and even though our blood' Is:circulating; we can get sluggish because of the downward gravitation- al pull. With the anti -gravi- ty device we are literally inverted and being pushed downward toward our head. "With the improvement of circulation, and the blood rushing to your head, you not only feel healthier and more energetic but it improves your hair, skin, P even the shape of your face in a sense that it doesn't seem to droop or sag as easily." Rebecca also cites im- provements in muscle tone, stamina and posture and credits this system for helping to keep cellulite from developing. Although she remains in the inverted position for a full 20 minutes, this time was built up gradually. She also advises that you should stop immediately if you feel pressure in your head and, of course, to check with your doctor be- fore beginning any new ex- ercise regime. SUPER BEAUTY HINT A beauty secret shared by some of the world's most elegant women, in- cluding Jacqueline Onassis, Mrs. Henry Kissinger and Queen Elizabeth, is a com- pany called Cyclax which still produces products by hand, making a mere three dozen items at one time, in comparison with 5,000 pieces made at once by most major cosmetic hous- es. This European line (which holds the Royal Crest of Excellence be- stowed orr them by the English royal family), for- rnerly only available over- seas, has now made its debut in the United States and is taking the country by storm.
