Kenneth Welsh, as James Munroe, is ably supported by Canadian actress Martha Henry as his wife Catherine. Catherine began the series as a passive partner in the union of James and Catherine Munroe, even though she had been the one with money and prestige and it was for these, reasons that James married her. In subsequent weeks, however, Catherine has become a dominant force in the household, a supportive and concerned mother to her four grown children, a warm and polished hostess as she entertained high society at the Munroe estates. She knows her husband does not love her. She also knows that behind her back he pays women for sexual favors. But she hides the hurt and continues the facade so the Munroe name will not be tarnished Martha nry, a frequent performer. Heat Stratford, is one of Canada's top acting talents. She studied acting in the U.S. and has performed on stages in Canada, New York and London. She has also appeared in many television productions and in feature films. A few years ago, she made her debut as a director at Stratford, directing her husband, Douglas Rain, in a production of "Brief Lives". Jennifer Dale stars as the elder Munroe daughter, Cleo. The child most like her father, she is strong-willed and domineering, and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Also like her father, she eventually has nothing, for she has alienated herself from those closest to her. Jennifer studied music and dance at the Banff School of Fine Arts and The National Ballet School, later at- tending the National Theatre School. She has appeared in many stage productions, including the Stratford Festival, and has starred in many television productions. She has also had starring and feature roles in several films. Many feel that "Empire, Inc." will be the break she needs to makeit as an actress internationally. You may well think you have seen the man who portrays lawyer Gene Prudhomme, in some other production. Gabriel Arcand won an award last year for his portrayal of Ovide Plouffe in the film story of The Plouffe Family. He was bitten by the acting bug while studying philosophy at McGill University and worked in several French Canadian theatres before going to Europe to study acting on a scholarship. When he came home to Montreal, he founded a theatrical group. He has also appeared in several feature films, both English and French. His brother, Denys Arcand, is a successful director and playwright. He directed three episodes of "Empire, inc.". National Museums Musses nationaux of Canada du Canada Canada STARGIZING Generally speaking stars are at their best when high in the sky where the disturbing effects of atmospheric re- fraction and pollution are less intense than near the honzon. For this reason Orion, focal point of the Winter Six -constellations featured in January Stargazing, is now at its best for early evening viewers, for the Giant Hunter stands upright, straddling the merid- ian above the southem horizon about 9 p.m. around the middle of February. Those passing the winter in more southerly latitudes enjoy this magni- ficent array of bright stars much higher in the sky than when they are viewed from our Canadian latitudes. White Ursa Major, the most prominent constellation in the northern half of the sky, reaches its highest evening position during summer, it has already started to swing upward away from the horizon where it may be partially hidden by trees or buildings in the fall. In much the same way that Orion helps to locate constellations toward the south, Ursa Major can be used to find constellations in the opposite part of the sky. Face north and look for the familiar dipper -shaped outline of Ursa Major. To use the map hold it against the sky tumed so that its north direction is at the bottom and against the horizon. Although the stars in this hall of the sky do not compete in brilliance with FEBRUARY those now above the southem hori- zon, the formations are distinctive and easy to recognize. First identify the "Pointers", the two bowl stars op- posite the handle of the Dipper. These stars `point" to the North Star, and locatedtue north. The con- stellation Leo and the North Star are on opposite sides of the Dipper and about the same distance from it. The Dipper and Cassiopeia are on op- posite sides of the North Star and large, square-shaped Pegasus is on the far side o1 Cassiopeia, near the westem horizon. In summer, when the Dipper is higher in the sky it can be used as a guide to other star groups. PLANETS: Venus is a prominent eve- ning "star" becoming even more dominant late in the month when it is higher in the sky at sunset. Much fain- ter but displaying a distinctive red colour, Mars is only one moon diame- ter from VenuS on the 18th. Saturn, rising in the east about midnight. and Jupiter rising about two hours later, dominate the predawn sky, with Jupi- ter much brighter than any star. Uranus, barely visible to the unaided eye even when conditions are ideal. is seldom mentioned in Stargazing. This is an excellent time to try to find it, however, because it is close to Jupiter -a little more than one moon diameter separates them on the 17th when moonlight will not be a problem. Use binoculars it you have them, wait until Jupiter is fairly high in the sky about an hour or so before sunrise. and search fora small, faint disk south of the brilliant planet. It is the disk that distinguishes Uranus from a star, which is a pinpoint of light. d h (Universal Time) 3 21 Satum 2° S. of Moon 4 19 Last Quarter Moon 6 13 Jupiter 1 °5 S of Moon 6 16 Uranus 2' S. of Moon 13 01 New Moon 15 02 Venus 4° N. of Moon 15 06 Mars 5° N. of Moon 15 15 Uranus 5° N. of Antares 17 05 Jupiter 5° N. of Antares 17 14 Jupiter 0°8 N. of Uranus 18 22 Venus 0°5 S. of Mars 20 18 First Quarter Moon 27 09 Full Moon NATIONAL MUSEUM ech technology 1867 SI. Laurent Blvd Ottawa K1A 0M8 ve LIVING WITH ARTHRITIS by Patrick Baker Grooming Tips For Arthritics You are your own mirror and attention to your person- al appearance is important in reflecting the way you feel about yourself. It may take longer for you to comb your hair or brush you teeth when your joints are stiff and pain- ful, so plan for extra time so that you are not rushed. Here's a few tips that may make your personal groom- ing easier for you: -energy may be con- served by sitting to complete your personal grooming. -foam curlers can serve as easy -to -add built-up handles for toothbrushes, combs and cosmetic wands; and -use of both hands when holding an electric razor, toothbrush or other groom- ing aid will help to reduce any joint stress and fatigue. Teeth Proper cleaning of your teeth and maintenance of good oral hygiene can help prevent serious dental prob- lems. Whether you use a manual or electric tooth- brush, select one that allows you to do a thorough job every day. An angled brush may. make it easier to reach all parts of your mouth and you can enlarge the brush's handle by covering it with an inexpensive foam curler. Electric toothbrushes have longer, built-up handles that are easier to grasp. Those which have dual motion (which move both up and down and from side to side) allow a more complete cleaning of the teeth and gums. A dental floss holder will help to compensate for foss of dexterity in the fingers and will enable you to massage your gums and re- move plaque from between your teeth. Hair You should consider a short natural style to reduce time required in grooming. Use light -weight hair blowers or small electric hairdryers with thin hoods so that you do not have to stru : r le with an elasticized hood, or just let your hair dry naturally. If your reach is limited, long -handled combs, which adjust in angle, are available from self-help equipment firms. Nails When holding a regular nail file is difficult, you might prefer an electric or battery -powered manicure unit. There are several types on the market which just file, clean and buff your nails. Another idea for grooming nails is to tape fine emergy paper to a flat surface, then file your nails against it. If cutting your toe nails is a problem, leave that job to your physician or ask a fam- ily member to help you. Don't be afraid to ask for help! Shaving Managing a manual razor is a tricky procedure at any time. If you have poor grasp, an electric razor is recom- mended. Women many find a cream dipilatory more satis- factory. Holding a razor with both hands helps you keep it steady and lessens stress on your arms. Rechargeable or regular battery -powered razors let you sit wherever you want in a comfortable ., position while shaving. Movies on Channel 4 SATURDAY, 11:30 P.M. -"BREAKOUT".
