The Wingham Ironmen
ended their 1982-83 season on
a losing note, dropping a 5-2
decision to the visiting
Hanover Barons Sunday
afternoon. The Ironmen
were sharp in the opening
minutes of the contest,
scoring on their first two
shots of the game, but from
that point on, they were shut
out by a tough defensive
performance and the steady

Ken Cousins opened the
scoring 16 seconds into the
game, ripping a shot from
the right point after crossing
the blueline. His shot caught
Murray napping. Tim
Davis evened the count at
1:10 as he shovelled in the
rebound after Murray
Robertson's point shot was
blocked. Todd Wheeler made
it 2-1 for Wingham as Rick

The puck was partially
stopped by Murray, but
caroned off his pads onto
Wheeler's stick and Todd
quickly fired it by the
helpless netminder.
The Barons managed to
shake off the cobwebs and
got their act together,
beginning to take the play to
the Ironmen, outshooting
their opponents 21-9 in first
period action. At 12:49, Chris
Ahrens' point shot through a
screen beat Campbell
cleanly after Mike had come
up with some good saves
prior to the tying marker. At
18:08, Rick Grubb potted the
eventual game winner as he
fired one from close range,
beating Campbell as he
attempted to block the shot
with both his stick and glove.
The Ironmen gave up a big
goal while on the power play
in the early stages of the
second period. Len Stam -
per's point shot was blocked
by a defender with the puck
bouncing outside the line.
That bounce created a two -
on -two with the Barons'
forwards having a slight
edge on the defence as Len
attempted to get back into
position. He made a good
attempt and very nearly
missed breaking up the
attack, but Tim Davis
managed to get his pass
away to Robertson who
quickly fired from the slot,
beating Campbell for a
shorthanded goal.
The final goal of the game
came at 13:09 when the
Barons broke out of their
own zone with a two -on -one.
Grubb made a good pass to
Brian Kuntz on the right
wing and Grubb made sure
on a shot that beat Campbell
through the pads.
The final period was
scoreless with the Ironmen
being outshot by a 13-9
margin.
Grubb was the first star of
the game with one goal and
one assist , for the Barons.
Ken Cousins was the second
star with one goal for the
Irbponmen and another good
physical performance.
Murray Robertson was the
game's third star as he
provided much of the back-
bone for the Baron defence
while providing one goal and
an assist offensively.

ONTARIO CHAMPS— Raymond Claus of Fordwich (left) and Ernie Webb of Listowel
defeated 148 other bowlers to take the provincial championship in the All -Ontario
High -Low tournament held recently in Orillia. The Listowel Lanes twosome were 170
pins over average and are the second Listowel team in 36 years to take the provincial
tournament. They will be bowling in Winnipeg on March 4, 5 and 6 for the Canadian
championship. For their All -Ontario win Mr. Webb and Mr. Claus won a stereo set and
a trip to Florida — so they have good reason to congratulate each other, (Banner

Blues play in Belmore tourney
By Esther Nethery
The Wingham Blues In-
termediate Ladies' hockey
team played some fine
hockey in a tournament in
Belmore last weekend and
boosted its spirits as it
prepares for the up -coming
playoffs. Coach Dave Golley,
as well as the rest of the
team, said he felt the team
played some of its best
hockey of the season and is
gaining confidence.
The tournament started off
the Blues with a game
against an all-star Sarnia
team. Sarnia seemed to have
the edge right from the
beginning as they boasted a
large cheering section which
supported its girls to the
fullest. Wingham played a
good defensive game and
gave up only one goal each
period, but was unable to
find the opposition's net and
the Blues were on the short
end of a 3-0 score at the final
buzzer.
Sarnia went on -to win the A
championship 6-2 against
New Hamburg.
The loss put Wingham up
against Tiverton, a team
which has given Wingham
close games all year and this
one was no exception with
the Blues coming out on top
2-O. That coerlbination of "7
and 11" came through again
as Dianne Golley scored both
goals and Donna Fischer
picked up two more assists.
The win put the Blues into
the B championship Sunday
afternoon against a strong
London club. The girls came
prepared and put out one of
their best efforts thus far.
London started things off
early, banging in a rebound
before the firsts whistle had
blown. Sandra Morrison
replied with her first goal of
the year to tie the score. She
dove at a loose puck and
pushed it into the net with the
shaft of her stick.
London got two more goals
before the end of the first and
seemed fairly confident until
Dianne Golley put Wingham
within one goal early in the
second. Her second goal of
the game once again closed
the gap making the score 4-3,
but the girls couldn't
manage any more and
finally were defeated 6-3 by a
good hockey club.
BLUE LINES — All the
girls gave 100 per cent in the
weekend's play and deserve
congratulations. Kathleen
and Eileen O'Donaghue
played excellent hockey and
although neither girl is very
big, they threw many good
hard chicks and carried the
puck with more confidence
than they had earlier in the
season:
Maureen Beattie and
Cathy Chisholm also are two
of the younger players on the
Sr. ringette girls
down Listowel 9-4
The Wingham Opti -Mrs.
Senior Ringette team
traveled to Listowel Jan. 29
and came home with a 9-4
victory.
The first half of the game
saw Wingham score three
times to Listowel's once.
Lori Gavreluk scored the
first goal, then her linemate,
Maureen Beattie, added two
more. Michelle Helmka
scored for Listowel.
The second half saw
• Listowel come back with
another goal by Helmka, but
Wingham pulled ahead with
another goal by Gavreluk.
Ellen Rodger and Leah
Kulas each scored and then
Beattie added her third goal
of the game.
Paige Cur scored Lis -
towel's third goal, but 16
seconds later Gavreluk
tallied again, her third for
the day, and Rodger scored
her second. Helmka got her
third goal of the game, but
Listowel could not come
back against the strong play
of the Wingham girls.
Picking up assists in the
game were Gavreluk with
four; Beattie, Rodger and
Sandra Morrison, two each,
and Leah Kulas with one.
Leesa Cook and Morrison
had a strong defensive
game, giving goalies Lynne
Braun and Vickie Belanger
lots of support.

Wingham Lions
maul Mitchell 7-0
Rob Schistad's shutout
goaltending and the scoring
touch of Brett Cameron led
the Wingham Lions Midgets
to a 7-0 win over Mitchell last
Monday night at the Mitchell
arena.
It took only 30 seconds for
Steve Nicholson to score
what proved to be the win-
ning goal, assisted by Brett
Cameron.
Cameron scored his first off
four goals at 4:39 of the
second, unassisted. Forty-
three seconds later Paul
Kenyon extended Wing -
ham's lead to 3-0, assisted by
Paul Robinson. At 7:43
Nicholson chalked up his
second -goal, assisted - by
Cameron and Bill Haines.
Cameron then went on a
scoring binge, with three
goals in a row. Jim Dennis
chipped in an assist on the
first marker; Mark Foxton
and Nicholson assisted the
second and Rob Willis picked
up an assist on the third
tally.
iCE CHIPS—In 25 games
this season, Brett Cameron
has 98 points on 49 goals and
49 assists — not a bad record
in any league.

Smith sensational in
shut out over Paisley
By Bill Johnston
With an all-out tears effort,
backed by superb goaltend-
ing by Ron Smith, the
Wingham Royals zeroed the
Paisley Maroons 4-0 in Inter-
mediate C action at the local
arena last Friday night.
The Royals, on the hustle
early, jumped to a 2-0 lead in
the first. Ron Bennett
started the scoring when he
cashed in on the rebound
from Gord Kinahan's point
shot, with the second goal a
powerplay goal by Rick
Jacklin with Dave Stephen-
son and Mike Montgomery
drawing assists.
In a close -checking second
period, the Royals increased
their lead to 3-0. The lone
goal of the period came at
9:13 on a lot of effort by Doug
Stevenson when playing a
man short. Stevenson won
the draw cleanly and fired a
direct hit at the Paisley
goalie. In the blink of an eye,
the rebound was back on
Stevenson's stick and in the
net to flash on the red light.
That shorthanded goal and
some sensational saves by
Smith, sent the Maroons to
the dressing room at the end
of the second, to put it
mildly, slightly frustrated.
In the third, things got a
little rough with a lot of stick
work and penalties galore.
Fuses exploded at the six -
minute mark as Royals'
Mike Montgomery and
Paisley's Dan Hettrick
tangled and both were
dispatched to early showers.
At 11:40, on the power
play, Murray Black, one of
the premier muckers in the
corner, threw a perfect pass
to the crease area which
banked off Stephenson's
stick into the net to send the
Royals ahead 4-0. Paisley
attacked full throttle in an
attempt to get on the score
sheet, but the little Royals'
goalie Smith, would have no
part of them taking away his
shut out and sent them back
to the bench time and again
shaking their heads in
disbelief.
WHISTLE STOPS — With-
out a doubt, this was, the
Royals' best effort of the
season. They skated well,
passed the puck with

The Wingham Junior
Ringette team played an
exhibition game against
Howick Saturday, losing by a
score of 4-2.
Wingham goals were
scored by Julie Leedham
and Leah Mlles, with Mari-
lyn. Zimmerman, Sharon
Strome, Leisa Heimpel and
Dianne Vandenbroek scoring
for Howick.
This was the first game for
the Wingham girls, as they
do not play in a regular
schedule. All the girls en-
joyed the game and played
very well. Team members
are Lynne Braun, Heidi
Strong, Tracy Scammell,
Leah Kulas, Terri Shaw,
Julie Leedham, Lori
Belanger, Shannon Robin-
son, Jennie Heinmiller, Anne
McGlynn and Jennifer
Willis.
Howick Juniors
finish -season in
second spot
The Howick Optimists'
Junior D hockey club finish-
ed its schedule in second
place behind the Grand Val-
ley Harvesters again this
season.
Howick has a team record
of 15 wins, three ties and 12
losses. Midway through the
schedule, Howick was
struggling for a playoff
berth, but they came on
strong in the final quarter
going undefeated in their last
seven games.
In the three games Howick
played last week, they
bombed Markdale 12-2 and
defeated Arthur twice by
scores of 7-2 and 7-4.
The team is hoping to start
its first round of playoffs this
weekend and likely will meet
Markdale.
authority and of course
everyone was talking about
the superb Smith who dished
Up a show in net. In this era
of high -scoring games, one
seldom sees a shut out —
well done, Ron.
A tip of the hat to Maroons'
Bob Kingston who worked
hard from start to finish and
certainly showed a lot of
class as he, even at game's
end, stuck to playing ° the
puck.
And what about the extra
work load carried by Gord
Kinahan for Wingham,
especially in the third
period. He just kept reaching
for extra effort as time and
time again he came up with
the puck and one way or
another managed to get it
out of the danger zone as the
Maroons applied pressure.
Kinahan took a lot of hits in
third, but kept working with
hardly a;est.
3
This certainly was a big
game for the Royals with lots
of excitement for local fans
and one of complete
frustration for the Maroons
and their good following of
supporters. Once again, the
"Share the Wealth" prize
was won by one of the
Paisley supporters, an at-
tractive blond and ticket
convener Dan Montgomery
was too shy to ask her name.
Winners of the hockey
weekend in Toronto were
Dave Black of Lucknow and
Danny Cardiff of Wingham.
Congratulations to these
winners and a special
thankyou to all those who
helped the local effort by
buying tickets.
The next home game for
the Royals is Feb. 19 at 8
p.m. in the local arena
against Mount Forest, which
will be the last game of the
regular schedule.
Royals upset 7-2 by
Mount Forest squad
By Bill Johnston
The most improved team
in the Intermediate C league; -
the Mount Forest Rams,
upset the Wingham Royals 7-
2 last Saturday night in
Mount Forest.
The Royals jumped into
the lead at 5:25 on a power
play goal by Steve Lehman.
Mount Forest bounced back
with a pair of goals in a mere
26 seconds and added a
power play goal at 18:12 to
give them a 3-1 lead at the
end of the first.
With Dave Stephenson's
powerplay goal 17 seconds
into the second, the Royals
were right back in the game.
However, Mount Forest
rebounded and before period
end,- goals by Blair Francis
and Fred McEachern gave
sent them ahead 5-2.
In the third period, the
lack of bench strength hurt
the Royals effort and Mount
Forest added to its .lead with
two goals by Gary William-
son_ta
victory for its loyal fans.
WHISTLE STOPS—This
young Mount Forest team
has come a long way since
the start of the season and
certainly was full measure
for the win. The keeper of the
sin bin was busy, as Mount
Forest picked up 49 minutes
in penalties to 36 minutes
racked up against the
Royals.
The Royals lack of legs
hurt them in 'the loss, with
only 13 skaters, plus the
goalies, were up against a
full roster of young legs on
the Mount Forest bench. The
Royals have a rest coming
this week and return to
action traveling to Harrison
Feb. 18 and will wrap up the
regular season against
Mount Forest Feb. 19 at
home.
