The Wingham LionS
Midgets showed little mercy
as they trounced Seaforth 11-
2 Sunday night at the Lock -
ridge Memorial Arena in the
opening game of their
playoff series.
Mitch Braun turned in a
magnificent game between
the pipes for Wingham,
allowing only the two goals.
The first came at the 18 -
second mark of the first
period, but Wingham wasted
little time getting that one
back as Doug Wood scored
less than a minute later,
assisted by Brett Cameron.
Cameron gave Wingham a
2-1 lead at 3:40 from Jim
Dennis. Just nine seconds
later, Cameron's second goal
made it 3-1, Dwayne Jenkins
and Dennis assisting, and
just 41 seconds later Steve
Nicholson widened the lead
to 4-1, from Cameron and
Bill Haines.
Paul Robinson's goal at
6:47 was assisted by Haines
and Dennis.
Seaforth opened the
scoring again in the second,
but then Wingham took over,
with Cameron completing
his hat trick at 3:32 from
Nicholson. Mark Foxton
made it 7-2 at 8:40 from Paul
Kenyon and Tim Brown and
defenceman Rob Willis
potted his first of two at 13:38.
from Cameron and
Nicholson.
Brown opened the scoring
in the third period at 5:55
from Cameron, who got his
fourth goal at 14:30 from
Nicholson‘ and Jenkins. With
just one second remaining in
the game, Willis notched his
second, assisted by Brown.
ICE CHIPS—This was the
opening game in a best -of -
three playoff series to
determine who will
represent this area in the
OMHA playoffs. A large
crowd in the local rink saw a
fired -up Wingham Midget
team play a strong game. If
Wingham can maintain this
intensity, this could be a
short series.
Legion PeeWees are
Elora tourney finalists
The Wingham Legion Pee
Wees advanced to the finals
this past weekend in the
Elora Legion Zone C Tour-
nament. Wingham defeated
Meaford 2-1 in its first match
and Mount Forest 5-4, both in
overtime.
In the Meaford game, the
two teams were tied 1-1 after
regulation time, but at 3:51
of the second period of
overtime, Paul Brophy
checked a Meaford defen-
ceman at the _Wingham
blueline and raced in alone to
beat the Meaford goalie Paul
Lebel with the winning
marker. Brophy also scored
Wingham's first goal in the
opening period.
Wingham then faced
Mount Forest which had
earlier defeated Hespler 4-3.
The local boys came out
flying and led 4-0 early in the
second period on two goals
by Brett Martin and singles
by Jason Ducharme and
Rick Leachman.
Mount Forest fought back
and tied the game at 4-4 with
two goals late in the second
and two early in the third.
The score remained tied and
Wingham went into overtime
produced only one goal,
scored by Jamie Robinson at
12:49 assisted by Goodall.
The second and third
periods saw a number of
penalties assessed, with nine
going to Wingham and four
to Mitchell. However this did
not slow down the Wingham
squad, as Billy Cameron
scored again at 1:11, assisted
by Goodall and Robinson. At
4:30 Walden scored, assisted
by Goodall, and Greg Walton
rounded out the scoring with
a goal at 10:10, assisted by
David Wheeler.
Three of the six goals were
scored while the Wingham
team was shorthanded.
The line of Goodall,
Robinson and Cameron had
a big night, scoring four of
the six goals. Doug Mon-
tgomery came up with the
shutout, with a lot of support
from his defensive squad.
The Bantams have a very
impressive record for the
season, with no losses. They
also won the championship
at the Durham Tournament.
FROM THE SIDELINES
— The shutout was the result
of strong penalty killing, es-
pecially the efforts of David

period, Martin raced down
the left side and hit Brophy

right side of the net.
Brophy made no mistake.
and tucked it behind the
helpless Mount Forest
goalie. Wingham advanced
to the finals against
Walkerton. The legs seemed
to be a little tired as
Walkerton captured top
honors with a well-earned 4-1
victory. Martin scored the
lone Wingham goal and the
team was presented with
finalist crests and will
receive- a trophy at a later
date.
In the tournament, Martin
had two assists and Leach-
man had two. Singles went to
Brophy, Terry Daer, Joey
Walker, Paul Edwards and
Dave Heinmiller.
In a league contest Feb. 1,
Wingham and Mitchell tied
5-5 in Mitchell. Murray
Foxton led Wingham with
two goals and single
markers came from Brophy,
Martin and Jason Moore.
Moore's goal came after''a
fine two-way passing play
from Bill Kinahan and
Walker.

Lions win

7-2 over
Seaforth
Led by a four -goal per-
formance by Brett Cameron,
the Wingham Lions Midgets
stopped Seaforth 7-2 Thurs-
day night in the Wingham
arena.
The same two teams will
meet in the league finals, so
this win gave Wingham's
morale a big boost after
losing the previous , two
games to Seaforth this
season.
' Wingham hit the score-
board first on a goal. by Steve
Nicholson at 1:46 of the first
period, Brett Cameron
assisting. Seaforth tied the
score at 11:34, but a goal by
Cameron with 30 seconds
remaining in the first frame,
Mark Foxton assisting,
restored Wingham's lead.
From the start of the
Second, Wingham dominated
the play. Paul Kenyon's
unassisted goal at the 32 -
second mark and Cameron's
second goal of the game at
3:32 ' from Foxton and
Nicholson gave the home
team a 4-1 lead. Seaforth
scored its final goal of the
contest at 4:42 of the second.
With Mitch Braun making
key saves in the Wingham
net, Seaforth's attack wilted
under a strong checking
blanket.
The third period scoring
was all by Wingham. Mark
Foxton's goal from Cameron
at the four -minute mark
gave Wingham a 5-2 lead,
and Cameron's third and
fourth goals put the game on
ice. Foxton and Nicholson
assisted on the third and
Paul Robinson • and
Nicholson had assists on the
fourth.
ICE CHIPS—This victory
ran the Midgets' record to 27-
5. The victory over Seaforth
showed this team can check
as well as score, as it shut
out Seaforth star Dave
McLlwain. The Wingham
power play notched four
goals in the game.
