For 23 years he was Premier of Newfoundland. He has al- ways .been a lively and con- troversial public figure. It's Joey Smallwood, the inde- fatigable Newfoundlander who is a living legend. On Thursday, February 10 at 8 p.m. CBC Television will broadcast a special 90 - minute look. at the life and times of this exceptional man. JOEY is a humorous, historical, and irreverent show which -captures high- lights of Smallwood's career, ranging from his birth on Christmas Eve, 1900 to his defeat at the polls in 1971. JOEY started as a hit stage production by the Ris- ing Tide Theatre of St. John's. The play has been specially adapted for televi- sion. Rising Tide toure JOEY across the country with Kevin Noble starring as Smallwood. "Remarkable" is how the Globe and Mail described Noble's portrait of Smallwood. Kevin Noble re- peats his singular perform- ance in the television pre- sentation. Also starring are Brian Downey. Sheilagh Guy, David Fox, Jeff Pit- cher. and David Ross. JOEY was a collective endeavor, created by the company in collaboration with writer Rick Salutin Donna Butt, co - Artistic Director of the Ris- ing Tide Theatre, directed JOEY for the stage. In this wacky but sobering comedy, the vicissitudes of modern life seem to have ganged up on Gary and Diana Webber, an attractive L.A. couple struggling to cope with big city problems such as inflation, smog, traffic and crime. The Webbers decide to pack it in and follow their neighbors Charlie and Ritato the_ simplicity_ of wilder- ness living in Oregon. They find Oregon is not as wonder- ful it has seemed from L.A. They had to adjust to the lack of everyday luxuries such as indoor plumbing and TV. Even local residents did not make adjusting easy - stealing their hard won supplies 'became common place.
