No matter how big the tur-
key you had over the holiday
season, it's unlikely it was
anywhere near the size of -the
whoppers they raise at Hy-
brid Turkeys in the Kitchen-
er area.
Hybrid is a big outfit. They
have numerous farms and
ship about half a billion little
turkeys a year to 44 coun-
tries of the world.
But they also have a
genetic division where they
breed huge turkeys - some
of them weighing up to 70
pounds! The world record is
78 pounds!
Mind you, that's out of a
3,000 gene pool. The 70 pound
turkey is still a rare bird. It
takes about a year for them
to grow and by that time
they're tough and stringy,
but processors gobble them
up for burgers and steaks.
I spent a day with Len
Weaden, the firm's produc-
tion manager, roaming
around a few of the farms
they have. They keep the big
fellas at a farm near the
village of New Dundee.
There are about 100 of them
fenced in a large pen. Pound
for pound, they're a match
for a 10 year old boy.
I discovered that when you
try to talk turkey, the
turkeys do all the talking. As
soon as Len and myself
would begin to discuss some-
thing, the turkeys would in-
terrupt. They'd begin to
"gobble gobble" in unison at
the sound of our voices. We
finally had to go outside to
talk.
Later on, we went to the
company's offices in Kit-
chener and I saw scientists
at work in a laboratory. They
were telling me that in the
future the 100 pound turkey
is a possibility. If that
happened you'd have a
turkey big enough to feed a
family reunion of 180 people!

A wooden
horse wins
the race
Once again, Wayne and
Shuster, Canada's rings of
Comedy, recreate one of the
great events in history,, the
Siege of Troy. Taken from
The Iliad by Homer, the
Siege of Troy, or as it is now
known, The Best Little War-
horse in Troy, airs Sunday,
February 6 at 7:30 p.m. on
CBC Television's Super
Comedy with Wayne and
Shuster.
The tale isa classic one. It
tells of Trojan treachery, the
legendary beauty of Helen of
Troy and the famous wooden
horse that led to the downfall
of the bustling city of Troy.
It is now nine years later
and she is still captive. Her
husband, Menelaus (Frank
Shuster), King of Sparta, has
failed in all his attempts to
rescue her. But wait, Mene-
laus has what he thinks is a
fail -proof scheme to capture
Troy and free Helen from the
clutches of Paris.
To execute his plan, Mene-
laus enlists the help of his
brother Agamemnon
(Johnny Wayne), who thinks
that his brother's idea to in-
filtrate Troy by using a
wooden horse as a decoy -
an 18 -foot wooden horse, is
crazy. Agamemnon also
thinks that Menelaus is less
than sane for putting all he's
got on the nose of this wonder
pony.
The battle is fought, the
Trojans are defeated, Helen
is released and Menelaus
wonders exactly who the real
winner is.
