This column will discuss
responses to opening
moves.
In the diagram, 0 played
his opening 4-3 by moving
two men off his mid -point,
probably the most popular
way to play his opening
roll.
Let's consider how X
might play two possible
rolls on his turn. As an
opening roll, 5-3 is usually
played by making the 3 -
point (8/3, 5/3) or bringing
two men down from the
midpoint (13/8, 13/10).
However, as a response
to O's 4-3 move, X should
instead hit with 24/16. Hit-
ting provides two benefits.
First, sending back a
third 0 man gives X a rac-
ing Lead, at least temporar-
ily.
Second, X begins extri-
cating his back men. Un-
less 0 hits on his next turn
(and 0 is less than an even
bet to do so), the escaping
X back man is likely to get
away scot-free.
As a general rule, you
should use 8's, 9's and 10's
rolled in response to an
opening move to hit in the
opponent's outer board
whenever possible. One ex-
ception, however, is a 2-2
rolled in the diagrammed
position.
X could hit on the 16 -
point with the 2-2, but this
would be using an excep-
tionally good roll to less
than its full potential - in
effect, squandering it. A
much better play is mak-
ing the 20 -point with 24/20
(2)
By capturing this ad r.
vanced anchor, X sets up
an excellent defensive for-
mation. 0 will now find it
hard to blockade the back
men because of their ad-
vanced location.
Notice, for example, that
O's three spare men on the
19 -point are no longer
available to help build or
strengthen a blockade.
Another advantage for X
is that if he is hit later in
the game, he has a guaran-
teed entry point from the
bar, located where enter-
ing men can easily escape
into the outfield and recir- 0
culate around the board.
It is important that X
capture the advanced an-
chor now, before it is too
late. 0 forces are deployed
in such a way that 0 might
otherwise rapidly build a
strong blocking formation
and trap X's back men on
the 24 -point.
Points are numbered 1
to 24, starting with X's
home board at the lower
left. A move, for example,
from the 7 -point to the 3 -
point is written 7/3. 7/3*
means that a man was hit
on the 3 -point. 7/3(2) means
that two men were moved
to the 3 -point.

FORT BEAUSEJOUR
How long could Fort
Beausejour, located in the
Chignectou 'region of New
Brunswick, have held out if
the Governor of Quebec had
given it the men and the
funds needed for its defence?
No one knows. History tells
us only that after a four-day
siege, Commander Ducham-
beau surrendered to Lieut-
enant-Colonel Winslow on
June 16, 1755.
Rebuilt and enlarged
several times in the years
following, Fort Beausejour
was declared a national his-
toric park in 1926. Through
the, archaeological discov-
eries made at the site, life in
the fort during that era is re-
created ` for visitors.
