F!. GORDON GREEN
With 1983 promising to be
as lean and grim as the year
just survived, big business
and Ottawa still insist upon
labelling the state..of our
economy as a recession. But
to the growing army .of this
nation's jobless that is sureay
too polite a term. For the
jobless at least, it is a de-
pression - a depression as
hopeless as that of the dirty
thirties.
And it seems to me that for
those of our young people
who have yet to land that
first real job in spite of their
endless searching, the more
permanent tragedy may be
the loss of self assurance -
the conviction that he or she
just can't be good enough.
The lack of self assurance
has of course, always been a
serious flaw even for those of
us who have been fortunate
enough to find and hold a
good job. A friend of mine
who has been a successful
high school teacher for the
last five years is suffering
the wrath of his wife these
days because he didn't apply
for a certain position in his
school's administration a
couple of months ago.
"I just didn't think I was a
big enough man to handle a
responsibility like that!" he
told me. "Of course my wife
couldn't see it that way be-
cause she didn't really know
what the position de-
manded ! "
Well the position has been
filled and I'm willing to bet
that my friend's wife is little
short of impossible now be-
cause the man who got it
isn't nearly as well qualified.
Hasn't a thing that my friend
doesn't have, if I'm any
judge, except assurance. Oh
he has that all right! He has
so much of it that some of his
critics give it an entirely
different name. They call it
conceit.
I heard one of them say
"Why if the position of God
was open, he'd apply for it."
Come to think of it serious-
ly, where, do you draw the
line between assurance and,
conceit? How humble can
one afford to be these days
and still be fair to himself
and his family?
For the discouraged youth
of 1983 that is a serious
question indeed.
Back in our Sunday School
days we were taught that the
meek will inherit the earth,
but if that was divine pro-
phecy it is certainly one
which has yet to be fulfilled.
Say what you will of the free
enterprise system's wonder-
ful possibilities, but the
meek in it are simply the
people that nobody knows.
On the other hand, who can
stand a braggart?
A long, long time ago when
I was very young and very,
very smart I could never
quite figure out how you
were supposed to let the
world learn of your smart-
ness unless you did a little
bragging about it{ I was just
beginning my fir t editorial
stint in those days. That was
with the dear old Family
Herald - God rest her lovely
soul - and the Editor -in -
Chief was the late It. S. Ken-
nedy, a man who was almost
as smart as I was and who
wasn't nearly so modest
about it. And one day he gave
me a bit of advice I never
forgot.
"Look here lad," he said,
"never be ashamed to let
people know that you're
good. You don't have to pro-
test the fact too loudly, mind
you. But giving yourself a
proper assessment is only
being honest - being honest
with yourself and with others
too. Besides," and I remem-
ber he said this with a
twinkle of that one eye the
Army had let him keep from
World War 1 "besides, there
are a lot of possibilities in the
fact that until people know
you better, they are
generally quite willing to
take you at your own valua-
tion...
"And if you should over-
estimate yourself - if you
should bit off more than you
can chew, you, will probably
just chew like hell, and when
you find yourself in a
predicament like that, the
possibilities are positively
limitless!"
