the Ironrnen from playoffs
By Peter Banes
The Wingham Ironmen
suffered two weekend losses
effectively eliminating them
from the playoff picture.
After an 8-4 Loss to Hanover
last Friday night, the
Ironmen lost 11-6 to Kin-
cardine in a shoot-out in
Wingham Sunday afternoon.
Friday's game was much
closer than the score in-
dicates, with the Barons
scoring three empty -net
goals.
The Ironmen emerged

Anderson. Brian Tenpas and
Anderson passed back and
forth as they slipped through
the defence. Tenpas' shot
from the slot was blocked
with the rebound lying to the
left side of the goal.
Anderson picked up the loose
puck, moved out in front and
fired into the far corner.
The Ironmen relinquished
their lead after 40 minutes,
giving the Barons a narrow
4-3 lead. The Baron goals
were scored by Chris

SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Children's Matinee
Saturday, Feb. 5, 1:30 p.m.
Rouw and Murray Robertson
with Robertson's a
redirected shot. Mike
Campbell appeared to be
caught sleeping on a hard
shot by Speer that tied the
game at two apiece.
Campbell alsoappeared to
be totally screened on two
low shots that barely found
room on either side of the
goal on separate occasions.
Ken Cousins and Steve
Lorenz were the marksmen
for the Ironmen.
Rick Grubb made it 5-3
early in the third period,
converting the rebound off a
Bruce Kuntz shot, but that
goal was erased when Dave
Montgomery circled the
Baron net, continued around
the slot and then fired one by
Brad Murray as the defence
failed to touch him. The
Ironmen pulled their net -
minder with a minute and a
half remaining and
surrendered three empty -net
golas in that time span. Two
of those goals were scored by
Tim Davis and one by Steve
Hooper.
In Sunday's contest, the
visiting Kinucks had little to
prove as they already en-
joyed top position in the six -
team league. However, they
exemplified what a winning
team is all about. The
Ironmen came out flat,
perhaps realizing they too
had little to work for. Feeling
the frustration of a disap-
pointing season, they looked
anything but impressive in
the first period, giving up
five unanswered goals as
Craig Weise scored twice
with singles going to Steve
MacPherson, Dave Pet-
teplace and Jeff McTavish.
However, in the final two
periods, the Ironmen
displayed a concerted effort
and salvaged some
credibility 'even though they
were outscored 6-4 in the
second. In the final period,
they shut out the Kinucks
while scoring twice them-
selves.
MacPherson completed
the hat trick with two goals
in the second, while Marcel
Verloon, Brad Fitzsimmons,
Dave Fair and Mike Serenko
added singles. Ken Cousins
potted two goals for the
Ironmen with Brian Tenpas
and Len Stamper adding one
each.
In the final period, Cousins
completed his hat trick and
Kevin Dietner scored his
eighth of the year.
Steve MacPherson was the
first star of the game with
three goals for Kincardine.
Ken Cousins was the second
star with three goals and one
assist for the Ironmen.
Cousins played one of his
most aggressive games,
bumping and grinding away
with opponents and enjoying
a definite superiority as far
as size and weight were
concerned. Steve Simpson
was the third star of the
game with four assists for
the Kinucks.
• The Ironmen will finish off
the season with a game
against the visiting Hanover
Barons next Sunday in
Wingham at 2:30 p.m.
Leroy Jackson was the
winner of $21.50 in the 50-50
draw.

Royals nip Mildmay 2-1
in a hard-fought contest
By Bill Johnston
The Wingham Royals got
back to their winning ways
Sunday as they upset the
Mildmay Monarchs 2-1 in
Intermediate C action in
Mildmay.
The home team struck
early with Terry Davidson's
goal at 2:14. The Royals got
that one back on the power
play, with Jim Wendt watch-
ing from the penalty box as
Dave Stephenson did the
damage with Dennis Knox
and Ron Bennett drawing
assists.
In the second, it was the
Royals turn to strike early.
At 1:33, Bennett had the red
light smiling with Stephen-
son and Ian Montgomery
doing the heavy spade work.
From that point on, it was
exciting end-to-end hockey
with close checking and no
further scoring. It was a
happy Royals roster that
skated from the ice with a 2-1
win at game end.
WHISTLE STOPS—It was
a big win for the Royals,
snapping a rather long
drought of winter games.
Added to the fact, coming out
Harriston Blues edge of Mildmay with a win is no
easy feat. The defence corps
came up with a big game to
keep the Mildmay attackers
hometown Royals 5'
By Bill Johnston
It, was exciting Inter-
mediate C hockey at the
local arena last Friday
evening when the league -
leading Harriston Blues
defeated the hometown
Royals 5-4 at the final
whistle.
In early first period action,
the Royals hemmed the
Blues in their own end but,
despite carrying the play,
just couldn't seem to come
up with a good scoring
chance: At 6:30, on the power
play, Harriston started the
scoring as Wa " Williams
fed a perfect e"t` s to Bob
Reid from the boards. Reid
moved into the slot and his
booming shot instantly
bulged the twine.
At the mid -point of the
period, with the Royals on a
power play, Harriston
picked off a pass at their
blueline and it was a two -on -
one as Fred Locking's pass
was driven home by Bill
Berfelz. Add to that, Brent
Manderson's goal with only
seven seconds in the period
and Harriston appeared to
have the game well in hand
with a 3-0 lead at the end of
the first.
The second period
belonged to the Royals. At
7:40, on a pretty give -and -get
play, Dave Stephenson broke
into the Blues end and
passed to Jay McLaurin who
instantly relayed the puck
back to Stephenson who
flipped it into the corner of
the net.
Two minutes later, the
Royals picked up their
second goal, a power play
tally, as Rick Jacklin threw
a rink -wide pass to Mike
Montgomery from beside the
net and Montgomery's ice
hugger zoomed into the net.
At 11:24, the Royals tied it
following a mad scramble as
the Blues goalie .was caught
• 20 feet from home base with
the puck squirting loose to
Ron Bennett who just
couldn't steer it home, but
managed to get it to
Stephenson who quickly
buried the puck in the
yawning net.
As the clock edged toward
period end, Harriston got a
big goal from Reid's stick to
take a 4-3 lead into the
dressing room.
The teams traded power
play goals in the third: For
Harriston, Reid picked up
his third goal of the game at
6:49. The Royals goal came
at 11:36 as Dave Golley
zoomed around the net and
tipped a drop pass to Rick
Jacklin at the edge of the net
and, with sure brute force,
Jacklin jammed it over the
red line to make the score 5-
4. Down one, the Royals
pulled their goalie, but just
couldn't get the equalizer.
WHISTLE STOPS—For
Harriston, once again their
defence came up with a big
game, with that Rock of
Gibraltar Bob Reid moving
in from the point to register a
big hat trick.
Nice to see Jay MacLaurin
back in action and the
reuniting of that big line of
MacLaurin, Jacklin and
Stephenson, they played well
as line, picking up three of
the four goals. This had"tobe
Mike Montgomery's best
game of the season as he
unloaded more than one
quick, hard shot from the
point.
The Royals did it again as
they called for a stick
measurement on Manderson
and won the call, leaving
Manderson sitting on the
penalty pines as the Royals
picked up their' third goal.
Speaking of Manderson, he
seemed to have his own
negative rooting section in

the latter stages of the game.
Third period action saw
Murray Black tangle with -
towering Hugh Clumas of the
Blues. As Clumas held Black
at arm's length, Black
landed several lefts and
rights to the face and
although both were sent for
early showers, Clumas got
the bulk of the penalties for
grabbing Black's face mask.
