By COLET 1'E BOUCHEZ As the saying tradition- ally goes, "Blondes have more fun." But then again if you looked like Donna Mills, the very beautiful and very blond Abby Cunn- ingham on CBS' "Knot's Landing," you would prob- ably have more fun than anyone else anyway! When Marie B. of Altoona, Pa., wrote asking, "What are the best colors in makeup and clothing for blondes?" I could think of no better fair-haired lady to ask than the charming Miss Mills. "To begin with," says Donna, "I stay away from pastel colors when choos- ing both my makeup and my wardrobe, as I think it makes anyone with light hair look pale and washed out. Also, I never wear black, even though it's tra- ditionally been a favorite for many blondes for a long time. I feel the con- trast is just too harsh." Donna's favorite colors include deep, rich tones of burgundy, wine, teal, plum and warm brown, and she says, "I find that when I use these rich, vivid colors I look more alive. For a long time blondes stayed away from these shades because it was believed the contrast to hair and skin would be too startling, but I don't find this to be true at all." Just one of Donna's out- standing features is her beautiful, crystal -blue eyes, and although last sea- son and the early part of this year found her wear- ing shades of brown and beige eye shadow, she now has a brand new look that incorporates some of the Movies on Channel 3 THURSDAY, 11:30 P.M.—"BAD LANDS". SUNDAY, 2:00 P.M.—"THE NUTTY PROFESSOR". Stars Jerry Lewis, Stella Stevens. A college professor acidental- ly discovers a formula which changes his appearance and personality. Movies on Channel 6 FRIDAY, 1:00—"THE KILLER WHO WOULDN'T DIE". (1976) A former homicide detective comes out of retire- ment after a friend, an undercover agent, is found dead. At first I thought it would look too harsh, but I found that if the colors are deep, rich tones and not just flashy, bright colors, it really en- hances my face." In addition, Donna lines the inside lower rim of each eye with a deep blue pencil to enhance her eye color. Blondes with green or grey eyes'can also use this shade, but brown -eyed blondes should stick to a brown pencil for lining. Because Donna has the traditional light complex- ion that is normally associ- ated with blond hair, she takes special care in choos- ing products as well as col- ors for foundation, blusher and lipstick. - "When I'm not on the set working," says the bub- bling and beautiful Donna, "I don't use a foundation. Instead I find that a trans- lucent powder works best, especially because my skin is oily and it helps cut down on the shine. "To add color," she con- tinues, "I use a light brown shading rouge to accent my cheekbones and nose and then highlight with blusher in shades of mauve, wine or bright pink, following through with similar -shades for my lipsticks. "Blondes have to be es- pecially careful," con- . cludes Donna, "that the colors they choose and the amount of makeup they wear does not make them look like a 'Cupie doll.' There is a fine line be- tween looking just right and appearing overly made up." Next week: Dallas' Mor- gan Brittany and beauty - tips for brunettes. To combat the problen) of an unwanted blemish or two (which can result from nerves or stress among other things) famed New York City skin care expert Lydia Sarfati of Klisar Salon offers this helpful tip: Boil sterile gauze in chamomile tea. Remove gauze with a spoon and let cool; apply to pimple for about five minutes to re- duce swelling and redness. Course for r nervous speakers An evening course on pub- • lic speaking that begins at the University of Guelph on Wednesday, Feb. 2 should help beginners and the more experienced to- overcome jitters. "Fear is every speaker's problem in • varying degrees," says lecturer Mary Mulholland. "People usually lack self-confidence because they have not had enough practice or feedback on their performances. Often they don't know their good points or poor points as speakers." Some fear is good and natural, according to the specialist. "Extra adrenalin gives power • and .energy, so the trick is to learn how to control and channel it. Ac- tors and speakers who become too complacent are dull," she notes. In the course, Mrs. Mul- holland will provide the _ group with much practice and discussion of each short speech. Topics include speaking techniques such as voice and breath control, relaxation methods, timing, - pacing, gestures and audi- ence contact. Useful tips for organizing and writing a speech will be presented. Since speakers often find visual aids extremely useful, Mrs. Mulholland intends to • discuss and compare the merits and disadvantages of methods. such as films, slides, overheads, flip charts and the blackboard. For information or to register in this ten session course, contact Continuing Education Division, Room 103 Johnston Hall, Univer- sity of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, NIG 2W1 or phone (519) 824-4120, extension :1956.
