Liona is a Canadian who gets gorgeous sounds out of a guitar; the classical com- positions of the European musicians have never sounded better. Good news after Christ- mas was that her second album, "A Guitar for Christmas", has earned her a gold record after selling more than 50,000 copies. Not much wonder! Her arrangements of "Silent Night" and "Away in a Manger" are breathtakingly beautiful. - This achievement, though common in the pop and country fields, is very rare in the classical world -''She is the first Canadian classical artist. 'to receive" a gold record. Liona has just returned from a Canadian tour which, i bet, helped "A Guitar for Christmas" find its way under many Christmas trees December 25. Howard Rollins of "Rag- time" will be huddling with Norman Lear to talk about a television series. Rollins is currently working on NBC's "Member of the Wedding." Kirk Douglas just fin- ished a tour of Afghan refu- gee camps in Pakistan for the U.S. Information Agen- cy.
