CBC's version of "Dallas"
hit the airwaves last Sunday
night as "Empire Inc.", a
six -part mini series about a
powerful, influential
Canadian family, debuted on
the network. It will continue
every Sunday at 9 p.m. until
February 14.
4"Empire Inc." was filmed
in Montreal, Ottawa and in
the studios of the National
Film Board over a nine-
month period ending in early
September of 1982.
It is the fictional story of
the Munroe family of
Montreal and its J. R. Ewing

businessman who will do
anything and hurt anyone to
get what he wants. His climb
to the top of the success
ladder is littered with the
people he has used and
manipulated to achieve his
standing.
Unlike Dallas' Ewing,
whose initial charm seems to
draw people to him like a
magnet, James Munroe is
hated by everyone. His
business associates com-
plain of his tactics; his wife,
whom he married because
she was wealthy and in-
fluential, has no feeling for
the man and resents the fact
that he takes little interest in
his ehildre i
In the "first "episode,
Munroe .pleads with his son
to leave his studies and work
for him, for he needs
someone he can trust ... and
rule. The son, who can sit at
the piano for hours and play
Mozart, wants to study
music. Daughter Cleo, bored
with her protective life in the
mansion, takes -a singing job
in a nightclub and falls for
her pianist .. who... is a
bootlegger. Daddy pays him
off to get out of her life and
Cleo uses some choice words
to express her true feelings
for her father.
The series takes the
Munroe family from 1929,
when the depression struck
to 1960 and the Quiet
Revolution. Kenneth Welsh
plays the stoic and stubborn
James -Munroe. Martha
Henry, a frequent performer
at Stratford, is too docile as
wife Catherine who once
controlled the pursestrings.
Jennifer Dale is daughter
Cleo who, in addition to

If you are looking for some
relaxing music to calm your
shattered nerves after a
hard day, look to Liona Boyd
and her classical guitar.
Liona is a Canadian who gets
gorgeous sounds out of a
guitar; the classical com-
positions of the European
musicians have never
sounded better.
Good news after Christ-
mas was that her second
album, "A Guitar for
Christmas", has earned her
a gold record after selling
more than 50,000 copies. Not
much wonder! Her
arrangements of "Silent
Night" and "Away in a
Manger" are breathtakingly
beautiful.
- This achievement, though
common in the pop and
country fields, is very rare in
the classical world -''She is
the first Canadian classical
artist. 'to receive" a gold
record.
Liona has just returned
from a Canadian tour which,
i bet, helped "A Guitar for
Christmas" find its way
under many Christmas trees
December 25.
Howard Rollins of "Rag-
time" will be huddling with
Norman Lear to talk about
a television series. Rollins
is currently working on
NBC's "Member of the
Wedding."
Kirk Douglas just fin-
ished a tour of Afghan refu-
gee camps in Pakistan for
the U.S. Information Agen-
cy.
