The best X can hope for
is to prevent a' gammon
and confine his loss to two
points instead of four. (A
gammon is scored at twice
the level of the doubling
cube, which in this case is
2.)
"Saving" (preventing) a
gammon is a two-step pro-
cess. First, all 15 men must
reach the home board. Sec-
ond, at least one man must
be borne off.
As far as the first step is
concerned, it usually
doesn't matter where in
the home board the men
are. Any of the six home
board points are equally
good.
That's why it is almost
always correct to move a
man, only as far as the 6 -
point and(to use the rest of
a roll to move other out-
side men closer.
In the diagram, X can't
move a man to the 6 -point
and must instead play the
3-1 in some less efficient
way. His plausible choices
are (A) 12/8, 12/9, 8/7, 8/5,
12/11, 8/5, 8/7.
The choices are equiva-
lent if 0 rolls a double. To
save the gammon, X must
himself roll a large double
(3-3 or better).
If 0 does not roll a dou-
ble, X has two turns in
which to bear off a man.
In this case, Play B is
best. There is no waste in
moving past the 6 -point;
and by spreading his men
on different points, all of
X's dangerous small num-
bers play efficiently. As a
'r'esult, only consecutive 2 -
l's do not save the gammon
in two turns.
Play A reduces X's good
rolls by stacking his men.
If X rolls a 1 next turn
(such as 6-1), he can only
bring one man in. This
means X must roll a dou-
ble on the following turn in
order to bear off a man.
Plays C and D are wrong
because a pip is wasted in
moving to the 5 -point. Oc-
casionally, this kind of
move is correct, but not
this time.
By moving to the 5 -point,
X leaves his outside men a
total of seven pips away,
one more than with Play B.
This difference can be
crucial. For example, if X
makes Play C or D and
then rolls 2-1, X is in real
jeopardy. On the following
turn 1-1, 3-1 and any roll
with a 2 (except 2-2) lose a
gammon.
Points are numbered 1
to 24, starting with X's
home board at the lower
left. A move, for example,
from the 7 -point to the 3 -
point is written 7/3. 7/3*
means that a man was hit
on the 3 -point. 7/3(2) means
that two men were moved
to the 3 -point.
