Marie Among the Hurons, the Naval and Mili- tary Establishments, the In- dian village, and Martyrs'. Shrine a "must" on their itinerary. But if you're up that way in the future, add another one to your list The Budd Wat- son Gallery. It's something you'd ex- pect to find in a metropolitan centre but it's located just off the main street in the town of Midland. It's a gallery of Watson's own photography, and thought to be the largest pri- vately owned gallery of its kind on the continent_ Watson is a Midland boy whose family has operated a photography studio there for years. He grew up in the business. Eventually, he be - carne interested in land- scapes with emphasis on rugged Georgian Bay scenery. During the past 20 years he's won s international ac- claim and his pictures hang in public buildings and in boardrooms across Canada and abroad. A couple of years ago, Budd bought Midland's old YMCA building and con- verted it into a gallery. It's a big rambling structure. There must be at least 20 big rooms in it and Watson's work is tastefully displayed in most of them. The prices for the pictures range from a hundredto ten thousand dollars. Part of the building is partitioned off for develop- ing and -enlarging. I watched him pulling off a massive six by ten foot print of a scene reminiscent of a _ Group of Seven painting. Incidentally, Watson is the only photographer anywhere whose work has been shown at the famed McMichael Gallery at Kleinburg. And it's been said that what the Group of Seven is to pain- ting, Budd Watson is to photography. He's constantly on the move, teaching and travel- ling; but he still makes Mid- land his home. (In Canada: Oxford University Press, To- ronto. $16.95.) t; by 103 j in. 90 pp Reviewed by PER('Y MADDUX • Exquisitely manu- factured, with its many pic- tures and diagrams, is the explanatory book on church building through the ages by Paul and Tessa Clowney en- titled "Exploring Chur- ches”. "It explains the different parts of a church and shows us various types ofarchitec- ture, such aszantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Ren- aissance, Reformation, and Baroque Rococo. There are different sec- tions on history in connect - tion with the the churches, such as the first Christians, the establishment of monas- teries, pilgrimages, relics, the Eastern Church, the Re- formation, the stave chur- ches of Scandinavia, the builders and how they oper- ated. This book is excellent for obtaining an understand- ing of the way churches were built and why and can pro- vide a helpful guide for ap- preciating visits to famous churches and cathedrals.
