Appealing for financial
help for the federation, Doug
Garniss said the Huron
County organization is "one
of the , most active in the
province." '
Last year, he said, its
activities included support of
the Foodlands Hydro
Committee, investigation of
colored fuel and sponsorship
of seminars on foreign
ownership of agricultural
land, soil erosion and other
subjects of concern to far-
mers.
Asked how funds were
raised, Mr. Garniss said
some money comes from
grants and that membership
fees of $65 and $75 from in-
dividual members are
another source of revenue.
"Maybe you should con-
sider a $30 increase in your
membership fees," Deputy
Reeve Lyle Pettapiece
suggested.
"Even if the fees were
brought to $100 we'd be short
of what we need," said
federation representative
Bill Mann.
Noting that in 1979, a levy
based on assessment was
collected for the federation
from Grey Township far-
mers, Mr. Mann asked that
this year, a grant replace the
levy.
The levy three years ago
yielded about $1,000, and
since then, the township has
not made a financial con-
tribution to the federation.
Coun. Murray Bray said he
had questioned about 15
Gz`ey Township farmers
concerning a grant.
"Two said no; six or eight
said yes, and the rest were
undecided," he reported.
"It's a limited consensus,
but I'd be inclined to give
them a donation."
"They go out of their way
to do what they can," said
Reeve Leona Armstrong.
The reeve recommended
giving the federation "a little
encouragement; a little
grant".
Reeve Armstrong's
suggestion that the Grey
Township federation be
given a $300 grant was ac-
cepted by her fellow coun-
cillors.
However, Deputy Reeve
Pettapiece said he wants the
township to have a "policy
about who gets grants".
"1 don't see how we can set
a blanket policy until we see
what the needs are," said
Reeve Armstrong. "I think
we have to deal with each
organization separately."
"You almost have to weigh
it on an individual basis,"
said Coun. Murray Bray.
It was noted that the
township's 1982 budget in-
cluded a $600 provision for
grants. Of this amount, only
$106 was expended. The $100
grant went to a 4-14 group.

UCW Unit Two
at Taylor
GORRIE — Unit Two of
the- Gorrie United Church
Women held its regular
monthly meeting at the
home of Mrs. Alex Taylor.
Mrs. Robert Hastie opened
the meeting with "New
Year's Thought", followed
by the scripture from'
Proverbs. The hymn "This
Is My Father's World" was
sung.
Mrs. Max Bell had the
topic, "Some ,secrets of
happiness for the new)year".
She said if we are to be
happy we must know where
and how " to find happiness.
We always should
distinguish between hap-
piness and pleasure. Our
bodies are not made for
enjoying pleasure alone, but
for action, such as standing,
carrying burdens and all
kinds of skilful work.
Christ .is the world's
perfect model, she con-
tinued. His life was open to
the world as he prayed,
"Father forgive them for
they know not what they do."
In helping others, we get a
great sense of happiness as
Jesus said "It is more
blessed to give than to
receive." Happiness is not
found chasing rainbows; it is
self-made.
A hymn was sung, followed
by a poem and a prayer.
Mrs. Taylor took over for the
business period. Several
items were discussed after
which the roll call and
minutes were read. Mrs.
Taylor closed the meeting
with prayer. Lunch was
served by the hostess and
