There have been television
commercials on CKNX
during the last two months
sponsored by the Wingham,
Kincardine, Walkerton and
Goderich Voice for Life
groups. The group was told
that many good comments
have been received on these
commercials. Members
were urged that all who are
dedicated to respecting
human life should become
informed, and also pass on
the message we are a caring
society and treat everyone
with respect and dignity.
"The telethon is a much -
maligned tool," says
Clarence Meyers, executive
director of the Ontario
Federation for the Cerebral
Palsied.
Speaking about the up-
coming "Weekend with the
Stars" telethon for the
physically disabled, Mr.
Meyers said some people
seem to think a telethon is
some kind of a carnival.
"Nothing could be further
from the truth. A telethon is
an opportunity, over a couple
of dozen hours, to reach out
to the whole community with
an educational program on
physical disabilities. We can
show and tell why
disabilities, occur,, how .thee
can - he- prevented and'. how
persons with' disabilities are
reaching out into the world
and succeeding in so many
ways.
"Sure," he concluded, "we
invite the public to give
donations to help in our work
with ,the disabled. These are
tough times — just as tough
for the physically disabled =
so we'll certainly invite par-
ticipation.
"However the disabled are
not asking for a handout.
They just want the op-
portunity to try to have those
things that you and I take for
granted: a home, training,
education, transportation
and jobs.
"To people out of .work —
and there are many of those
right now — we say, 'Here's
your-ehance-to -help someone
who may never have a job!'
And the fact you can also
provide equipment and
research which will help
prevent birth defects and
disabilities in the future is a
wonderful bonus."
The "'Weekend with the
Stars" telethon for the
cerebral palsied has been set
this year for Jan. 22-23.
Participation Lodge is a
member of the Ontario.
Federation for the Cerebral
Palsied and is joiping in the
Province -wide effort on
behalf of physically disabled
adults in this area.
The telethon can be seen
on CKNX-TV this weekend,
and ' members of the
Wingham Optimist Club will
bye manning phones to record
the pledges.
