We're convertin ow- I: into a sort of convertin room ,and second wing room for our large family. Although the garage has only one medium-sized window on the wall, I don't want the room to be dark like a cave. How can I cre- ate a plush, light setting for this room? I want to carpet the floor instead of having vinyl or wood. Please sug- gest a color scheme that would be attractive. — P.C.R. A. You can still have a light room even without natural light. Consider two factors: adding lots of pleasant artificial lighting, and choosing fairly light colors for floor, gpholstery and wall coverings. These combined should provide you with what you want. Designer Patricia Gay- lor created a pleasant media room starting with a pleasant mini -print fabric in peach and white which she applied to the walls. She chose a seafoam green velvet acrylic for two sofas placed m an L. An occa- sional chair with ottoman was covered in a muted green and peach fabric. Etageres and small end tables in natural rattan to hold stereo, turntable, video tape recorder and video games provide light furnishings, enhanced by numerous green plants. Borrowing from this plan, choose your own fa- vorite colors and mix them as Gaylor did in wall ,eov- ering, upholstery and ear- peting. Q. I have a T-shaped entry hall whieb is dark and unattractive. I want to make it seem larger, liar- ticularly at the top of the T. I'd like a rather contem- porary look to fit with the house. There is almost no natural light because the entry hall is between the living and dining room. A. An imaginative floor covering can do much to enhance a small space. For example, consider a white vinyl with strips of con- trasting color that could extend the length and width of the room. - To widen the narrowest partition of your entry hall, be certain you plan so the stripes go across the space rather than down the length of the area. This will tend to push the walls out. At the top of the T, which I imagine you look at on entering the front door, plan something extremely eye-catching — perhaps a lovely framed mirror, and arrangements of interest- ing accessories such as sculpture or a spectacular flower arrangement that OLD CANS MAKE A GOOD OUTDOOR "HOBO STOVE" W ELD olt GLUS DfS16NtD $ 8un.T sY ERNEST N06reooM of oelMI, Glufol4l lA SMALL CANS WELDED OR Mies ToteeleR ATTACH FLUE SY PITTING CANS ism CARtruwf CUT Het -e , SISAL. Play lights on this spot with a track of lighting on the ceiling. Q. I recently came upon a hand -crocheted bed- spread that will be just great for my bedroom. I now need to think about a dust ruffle for my bed. How can I turn Ibis bed- spread into something spectacular for my dull un- interesting bedroom. I prefer a soft, feminine look in pale colors. I have pale beige carpeting, and my bedspread is off-white: — P.M. A. Hand-crochetecd bed- spreads are quite a find and should provide a great decorating point for you in your bedroom. Shop for a fabric that' will complement your bed- spread — one that is pretty and feminine and has the same qualities as your bed- spread. Use the fabric for a dust ruffle or a more tailored box pleat around the bed. To enhance the bed you could create a crown cano- py. This is done by cutting a 'half circle of plywood with a diameter of about 18 inches. Cover the wood with fabric and attach to the wall almost at the ceil- ing.level.. Staple _.to the wood shirred lengths ' of your fabric and let the fab- ric drape down on each side of the bed, using tie- back hardware on the wall to hold the fabric against the wall. This is a simple . way to create a canopy but a most effective one. If you can buy extra fab- ric at a good price consider applying the same fabric to the walls. This can give you a great look. fall and Winter CLEAQANCE 3Q1/Qy ff our complete inventory. We must make room for our new spring collection arriving daily. 9 Church St. W. Elmira. 669-5 0 1
