Could you please help me find an easy way to clean filthy kitchen cabi- nets. We bought this house about a year ago and it has very good wood through- out- But apparently the previous owners never cleaned. I've used liquid sandpap- er, paint and varnish remo- ver and I have tried other, materials. With most of them, the odor is unbear- able. I've tried scrubbing, but dirt and grease are so em- bedded that it doesn't seem to do any good and I do not want to ruin the cabinet wood. The only solution I can think of is an electric sand- er. Do you know of a better way? — Liz B., Bell Gar- dens, Calif. A. If the original finish is worn away so much that dirt becomes embedded in the wood, I suggest fust re- moving all the old finish with a quality washaway paint and varnish remover, then sanding, with an elctric sander if you wish, before refinishing. There is no easy way, and this is your only remedy. But another point to con- sider: If the stains are still embedded in the wood after removing the old fin- ish. you can use a bleach for wood, available at local paint stores. If you take this bleaching step, then You will need to stain the wood before putting on a new clean finish. However, before going to this much work, try wash- ing the cabinets with this formula for cleaning mil- dew and stained wood: two- thirds cup of trisodium phosphate, one-third cup laundry detergent, one quarter of household bleach, mixed in three quarts of warm water. Q. I have`misplaced-your solution for removing the skid -proof appliques from a bathtub. Would you please repeat the answer for me again? I have tried a!1 -the. usual methods, but- . none seems to work. L.M., Imperial Beach, Calif. A. Several others have also asked for a rerun of this information. Apply Spray -n -Wash or Magic Spray, trade name products. Soak for one-half hour. wipe with a coarse dry cloth. Repeat the pro- cess if necessary. Clean the tub thoroughly, should you want to apply new ap- pliques. A reader who folowed these instructions said it -was not quite that easy," but found that using nylon net, instead of cloth, helped remove the applique stains. Another reader offered this suggestion: Take a cloth saturated in rubbing alcohol and leave it on the appliques for one-half hour or so. Then lift off with a nail file. This process took awhile, but it worked. Still another reader of- fered this suggestion: "My method for bathroom decal removal is so simple and quick that I thought I should write after reading the long, arduous ways oth- ers use. Putt, a cup of dishwasher detergent in the tub. Cover with very hot water and leave over- night. Most all the decals will come off in the morn- ing. Remove the remaining bits with nail polish remo- ver. "Forget brushes, putty knives and all that work. Total time — maybe 15 minutes of work. This is my own discovery." L. Mil- ligan, San Diego Q. I dropped a heavy ash tray on my coffee table, making a depression in the wood. Is there anything t can do to repair the sur- face without having to re- finish the entire table top? — Esie Ann M. A. If you did not actually gouge the wood, you can try swelling the area up with steam. First, remove the wax and polish from the affect- ed area, using a furniture cleaner. Then cover the dent with several layers of slightly dampened cloth. Place a coin or bottle cap (top down) on the cloth di- rectly over the dent. Press a hot iron on the cap or coin fgr__few sec- -ands -at -a -tins This will- -concentrate the steam where you need it. But with emphasis, I stress just a "few seconds" at a time. Be very careful not to scorch the wood or soften the fin- ish. This may mean a few times, but if you are pa- tient, it should work. Q. I have a velvet sofa that needs cleaning and I would like to clean it myself. Could yon please recommend a cleaner or do you know of anything I can use on velvet uphol- stery? Would appreciate any help you can give me. — Mrs. V.A., Ell Cajon, Calif. A. I recommend that you consult a professional cleaner of carpeting and upholstery, because you might damage the velvet with any do-it-yourself treatment. However, you can try cleaning with naph- ta, being carefulto have adequate ventilation so as to avoid danger of causing a fire. I would not advise a water-based type of sham- poo for velvet surfaces. Q. I have two questions. We have extended a used - brick fence with new bricks. Can the new bricks be made to match the old bricks? My husband did not di- lute the acid be used to clean a brick fireplace, which I understand should have been done. What dam age has been done? — Cyn- thia Q., Lakewood, Calif. A. It would be practical- ly impossible to make the new brick- match the old brick. Some brick plants do "manufacture" used brick by building a brick wall, splattering it with mortar and then letting it age somewhat in the weather and sun. You might try this on your extended section of the brick fence, but no guarantees that you'll like the result. In answer to your second question, first wash the brick in the fireplace thor- oughly with clear water. After the surface is thor- oughly dried, you should be able to tell whether any damage was caused by the condition of tl bylek. If the brickS:not dam- aged too badly, apply a good masonry sealer which could help keep the brick frem crumbling. Muriatic acid used to clean masonry should be diluted one part acid to nine parts water. I'm calling about your Crossroads Classified ad fora '72 van. Sold! It's just what I need. Both came together in this hand from the Hungary -Britain match in the European Team Championships of 1973, but the Hungarian . declarer missed a chance for a sub- stantial gain. Instead of picking up 13 international match points he lost 13. The English pair set the auction in motion when West opened two diamonds in third seat. By agreement this showed either a weak - two opening in the majors or a 4-4-4-1 hand of 17 to 24 points. East obligingly bid two hearts, waiting for clar- ification, and West passed, thereby substantiating a weak -two bid in hearts. North, who had patiently listened to the proceedings and had anticipated West's pass, now doubled for tak- eout Holding a five card -suit and two ,acus;= "South jumped to, game in spades. But North was not through. He raised to five spades, asking partner to bid slam with a heart control. South had one and did. West led the king of hearts and declarer was un- sure whether he liked his contract. Success seemed to hinge on the location of the missing king of trumps. Winning the first trick de- clarer immediately led a spade toward dummy. West showed out, dampening South's ardor. Still there was little he could do but finesse the queen„East, with no heart to return, ducked, then won the jack of spades continuation and led back yet another spade. Here declarer went as- tray. He won in hand with the 10 of spades, drew East's last trump with the ace, then finessed the jack of clubs. When this held he played the ace, entered dummy with a diamond and threw a heart on the club king. Another heart was dis- carded on the queen of dia- monds but South still had a heart to lose at the end. Declarer must win the third round of spades in dummy rather than in hand. Th)e club finesse followed, Rickshaws lighter Bangladesh's heavy rick- shaws,. which shorten a puller's occupation life to about 12 years, have been redesigned and lightened by a Canadian development agency. Declarer deserved his loss for he had been doubly lucky: first, to fmd East with a singleton heart; then, to have East slip in defense. Analysis shows that the con- tract must go down if East does not win the second round of trumps, thus de- stroying the entries to the closed hand.
