Blues extend their streak
with te against Be/more
By Esther Nethery
The Wingham Blues In-
termediate ladies' hockey
team extended its unbeaten
streak to four games with a
three -all tie against the,
Belmore ladies.
The game proved to be the
° roughest the Blues have been
in this year and many
penalties were assessed to
both teams. Wingham had 14
minutes in penalties,
compared to 15 minutes for
Belmore. •
The teams came out flying
in the first, with the puck
traveling end to end through-
out the period. Carol An-
derson broke the scoreless
tie midway through the first
on a. slapshot from the point
thatiuo'k the Bel'inore• goalie
by complete surprise. An
assist on the play went to
Dianne Golley.
The second goal was an
equally effective slapshot
from the point off the stick of
assistant captain Lynne
Haines, with Anderson given
an assist on the, goal.
Wingham seemed to have-
the
avethe edge in the second period
and controlled the play more
than it had in the first. The
Blues struck early in the
second with a goal by Golley,
who was left open in front of
the net and put the puck past
the sprawling goalie. Donna
Fischer once again set up
Golley's goal, a job she has
been doing quite effectively
this season.
The•convincing three -goal
lead was short-lived as a
slightly over -confident
Wingham team and a
determined Belmore squad
hit the ice for the third
period. •
Janet Schefter got things
started for the Sugar Cuties
with a ,goal assisted by
Christine Lowry at the 5:22
mart : Schefter closed, the
gap too' onet•gda1 •ibour. half-
way through the period with
the assist being earned by
Nancy Dickson.
Belmore came on strong
after this second goal, and its
efforts paid off when Marilyn
Kieffer tied the game with
just over one minute showing
on the clock. Schefter picked
up her third point of the
night, being awarded the
assist on the goal.
BLUE LINES—This was a
disappointing game for the
girls, as they had such a lead
cut down to a tie due to a
shaky third period. This is,
however, the best they have
done against Belmore and
perhaps better games lie
ahead.
Donna Fischer , deserves
special mention as she
continues to be a hard-
working player who is
always digging in the cor-
ners and coming out with the
puck. She has made many
key passes that have
resulted in goals by the.
team's top scorer, Dianne
Golley. Golley also played a
good game, throwing many
good checks and coming up
with some fine offensive
moves.
Jane Vath played a good
game, carrying the puck.°
well and initiating some fine
passing plays.
The Blues' next game will
be Sunday, Jan. 16, at 4 p.m.
in Tiverton. Their next home
game has Wingham facing
off against Huron Park on
Saturday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m.
