How can t fix wood screws firmly into plastered walls? Ben Virgil M. A. Ordinary hexagonal lead pencils can be used as expansion plugs. Simply cut a pencil into 3/4 -inch sections and push the lead out of these sections. Drill holes into the plastered walls to make a snug fit for these pencil lengths. Then drive in your screws, which will expand the wood for firm settings. Q. I'm planning to build a swimming pool, perhaps next spring, and I'm both- ered much about what to do with it during the winter which follows. Some tell me to let it freeze. Others advise that it should al- ways be drained. What is your advice? — G.F.L., Dover, NJ. A. Although there is some difference of opinion and varying experiences in handling cold weather pool problems, it seems to- be quite generally agreed that a swimming pool should be left filled over the winter, especially in areas where the average frost line just about equals the median depth of the pool. The reason is, mainly, that when the water in the pool freezes, the frost pres- sure on the wall will be more nearly equalized; there will be less all-over 11 over - movement and less likeli- hood of damage to the wall. This has been the general experience of pool owners in cold -weather lo- cations. - In the northern tier of states where mid -winter cold is more severe, swim- ming pools are sometimes "cribbed” or lined with softwood (pine or cedar) logs eight to 10 inches in diameter and cut to short lengths so that they can be more conveniently stacked along the walls and lashed in place. When the water in the pool freezes, the soft- wood logs tend to act as an expansion strip, absorbing and equalizing the pres- sures exerted against the wall by deep frost. Q. I discovered an old pewter coffee service in the attic. I have tried the oil and ro to stone paste and several poll hes, as the set is badly blackened. Is it possible to restore it to its original soft luster? — T.O.K. A. Try rubbing. with "00" steel wool, dipped in olive oil to prevent scratching the surface. If the set 'teas a brownish sale, rather than a really blackened appearance, soak the pieces in a strong lye solution. Anything with wooden knobs or handles of Jap - panned should not be treat- ed this way. Cover items completely, allowing to remain about 15 minutes, then remove with tongs, rinse carefully and scrub witha soft brush. Then polish the pewter in the regular way. Q. 1 recently did a brick repair job, using a ready - mixed mortar between damaged joints. My neighbor came over while I was working and criticized me for mixing too much mortar at one time. He said this after be saw me add some water to a mixture That had started to set. Is he correct? And if so, how do I know how much mortar to faits so that it does not begin to set before I use it? — Art L.P. A. Your ,neighbor is right. Mortar generally be- gins to set in about one-half hour. Therefore, do not mix any more than you can use in that length of time. It is true that adding a little extra water to the unused portion will make it workable again, but it may also weaken the mixture.
