By JEFF WARD
Although many ad-
vanced, players will find
this a trivially easy prob-
lem, some beginner and in-
termediate players might
go astray because they do
not understand X's proper
game plan.
The key factor is that X
is significantly i 1 in
Y behind
the race. This means that if
no further hitting occurs,
and if both players roll ap-
proximately equal num-
bers, 0 will bear off all his
men first and win.
If X rolls much larger
numbers than 0, X can
overcome this disadvan-
tage. But since X can't de-
pend on this, he should play
to maximize his chances of
hitting. By hitting and
sending 0 to the bar, X .. wipes out O's racing lead.
This is why X should not
touch his man on the 21 -
point for now. Advancing
this man simply increases
O's safe territory behind
X's forces, making it easier
for O tola safely.
toplay Y
For this reason, X would
actually prefer his back
man to be as far back as
possible, the 24 -point being
ideal. But since X can't
move backward, he should
do the next best thing and
leave the man where it is.
X's best play is 6/5(2),
8/7(2)./With this move, X
begin$ building a blockade
thata hopes to use later
to traj an 0 man after hit-
ting.
The recommended play
gives X three blocking
points in a row, plus X in
great shape to make the
blockade even stronger
next turn. Notice for exam-
ple, that any 5 remakes the
8 -point, adding a fourth
point.
Besides preparing ' for
the future, the recommend-
ed play also applies imme-
diate pressure on 0. Be-
cause of X's new blocking
structure it becomes more
dangerous for 0 to take
risks.
For example, 0 may
have problems clearing the
10 -point safely. With a roll
like 2-1, 0 might otherwise
be tempted to play 10/12,
10/11 and risk being hit.
Now, however, the risk
of being hit is much great-
er since the man sent back
might never escape X's
home board. Instead, 0
would give strong consid-
eration to 19/20/22, a move
which merely postpones
the problem of clearing the
10 -point.
Points are numbered 1
to 24, starting with X's
home board at the lower
left. A move, for example,
from the 7 -point to the 3 -
point is written 7/3. 7/3'
means that a man was bit
on the 3 -point. 7/3(2) means
that two were moved
to the 3 -point.
