brnan sponsored Whiled
through foster parents Plan
A Special commitment has
been made by a Wingham
woman. Annette Lindsay has
become a foster parent to
little Edren of the Phillipines
and her monthly con-
txibution will bring much-
needed help to the child, his
family and his community.
Edren is the second child
sponsored by Mrs. Lindsay
through the plan. For the
past nine years, she had
sponsored a young girl from
Equador. .
Mrs. Lindsay was
prompted to become a foster
parent because of television,
newspaper and magazine
advertisements urging
people to contribute to the
plan. She had just entered
the workforce at the time
and said she decided she
wanted to do something good
with her money.
The objective of the Foster
Parents Plan f Canada is
not dependenc14, but to help
the family come self-
sufficient. is is ac-
complished by programs of
medical and dental care,
vocational training and
counselling by professionals.
A foster child is usually
sponsored until the age of 18,
but the last child Mrs.
Lindsay sponsored was
considered self-sufficient at
15.
In one of her letters to Mrs.
Lindsay, the girl told her
that shehad progressed so
well in her schooling that she
wanted to become a doctor.
Mrs. Lindsay said it gave her
a good feeling to see the child
independent .and added that
she felt her contribution had
paid off.
Seventy-seven percent of
Mrs. Lindsay's monthly $23
contribution goes directly to
her foster child and his
family. She said she con-
siders that a good per-
centage and in the nine years
she has been sponsoring a
foster child, the monthly rate
has gone up only $4.00.
Some people in Canada
feel sorry for themselves,
said Mrs. Lindsay. They will
not contribute to programs
such as the Foster Parents
Plan because they feel they
cannot afford to, yet they
probably spend at least that
much in a month going out
for dinner or even buying
cigarettes.
The poor in this country
are looked after by the
government, said Mrs. Lind-
say. But people in other
countries are starving and
uneducated and living in
places which are torn with
civil and political strife.
The greatest reward
comes from knowing your
dollars are doing someone
some good. Mrs. Lindsay
said she noticed a tremen-
dous difference in the ap-
pearance of her first foster
child from the first photo-
graph she received of her
and those sent after the pro-
gram was initiated.
The first photograph
showed a little girl with a
distended belly and poor -
fitting clothing.
But she could see the plan
in action when subsequent
photographs showed a
healthy, happy child who
was decently clothed.
Mrs. Lindsay's second
foster child, eight-year-old
Edren, will benefit from her
monthly contribution as will
the rest of his family.
Edren's parents and the
three other children in their
family now will be entitled to
medical and dental care,
social and health counselling
and a good education.
Mrs. Lindsay said she
would like to visit her foster
child someday, but the cost
would be prohibitive at the
present time, and she also
has two small children of her
own to look after.
Being a foster parent to a
needy child is a worthwhile
experience and something
Mrs. Lindsay said she hopes
to do for the rest of her life.
