Who Stayed Behind" Continued -from Front Page and they usually do a lot in the , last, few days before ,+Christmas. In;;general, she said, they have done 'about the same ariiount of business as in other years, though perhaps the number of customers has .dropped. She said she finds people still like fancy clothes =- the Lady Diana look is very popular right now - which leads her toconclude that ' hard times are not upon us yet: When times were really tough, people made do with one good dress or suit. Althea Stuckey of Hanna's Men's and Boys' Wear reported November was a slow month but things are picking up now. People do seem to be shopping more carefully and buying more practical gifts, such as socks, she said. At Layton -McBurney Furniture, Doug Layton pointed out that in many at .9 -dress rehearsal last Wednesday for ThurSday even- ing 's prodyction. t kzo is slowdown cases furniture stores had their Christmas in June, when the provincial sales tax Was lifted. Asa consequence business is slower, though it certainly isnot the worst year the "store has had. Like Mr. Middleton, he remarked that people are being more selective in their buyingaand• there°are not so many "lookers" passing through the store. Even the food stores have noticed some changes in buying patterns this„ year. Ron Cooper,:. manager of the K Food Store in Wingham, said it has taken a while for, the Christmas shopping to get going. November was slow, but business picked up the first week in December and has increased every week since then, he reported. Items such as baking goods sell well at this time of year and that pattern has, continued, he said. In fact it appears that more people may . be doing their own We're jumping for joy over the Merry Christmas you'll be having? Lynn, Annabelle and Staff LYNN HO Y ENI ERPRISES LID. Highway 86 East, Wingham Tel. 357-3435 baking in response to the high cost of pre -baked goods Also other fancy foods such as canned shrimp are hot sellers during the holiday season.' He noted - that people seem to be more price -conscious than . in the past, and are buying more specials: Harvey. Heinmiller, manager of the local Zehrs supermarket, had similar observations. He said the volume of business is up over last year, but people seem to be going more for, the specials. More people are coming in with shopping lists and trying to, stick to them. Special prices 'on turkeys have ensured that they sold well, he noted, and other Christmas foods also have been moving well: The buildup to the Christmas rush has been gradual, he reported. The big boom started last week and should continue this Tuesday arid Wednesday. Curiously,- while a majority of the businesses surveyed agreed things have been slower than normal this fall, one .establishment is finding itself hard-pressed to keep up with the rush. More people than ever seem to want to travel, reported Annalisa Fitz- simmons, manager of the local Holiday World travel agency, and as a result she is looking for an experienced agent to help with the bookings. Business is up, both iri: terms of sales and°number of people, she said. Florida is the most popular destina- tion. especially this year with a special airfare offer- ed. and quite a few are going to Hawaii and Jamaica. This is not usually a busy time for travel, she added, but there has been a drive by the travel industry to promote holiday packages this year by dropping prices. She said she doesn't know if that is why more people are choosing this winter to get away from it&all, or if it is because they feel next year they might not be able to afford it. • Even so, they are not entirely, immune from the economic crunch, she added. There have been a few cases of people booking a trip arid then calling back to, cancel the reservation because they jiist discovered their most: gage is coming due. MRS. WILItAM SOTHERN fT. Chief outlines laps for Yule fire safety A happy Christmas can chance in a few moments into a family tragedy in homes ' where fir safety precautions are neglected, warns Fire Chief. Dave Crothers, Wingham. The chief uges the public' to exercise special care in the setting up and decoration of Christmas trees, and draw attention to the following important points: If plans call for a natural tree it should be bought fresh and green, and kept outdoors or in an 'unheated garage before being brought into the home for decorating. Then, one or two inches" should be cut diagonally from the butt, and the tree shold be set up with the butt in water which should be maintained above the level of the cut. Check strings of electric lights carefully for worn insulation, broken plugs or loose bulb .sockets. Only CSA -approved lighting sets and only non-flan7:mable decorations should be used. Declare the tree a no - smoking area and keep mathces out of the hands of children. Do not allow discarded gift wrappings to accumulate under the tree. pispose of them as soon as the gifts are opened. Even a green tree will burn if ignited by bur- ning paper around the base. Set up the tree -away from heat sources such as fire places, TV sets or radiators. Do not allow it to block ac- cess to doors or windows in the event of fire. Switch off tree lights at bedtime or .when leaving the house. Chief Crothers pointed out that tests have proved the safest tree is a tree with its butt set in water. However, if a tree has dried out before -it is set up, it cannot, regain its safe moisture level. A dry tree can be ignited. by a single match, to burn violently to a charred state in a few moments. Even artificial trees can be serious 'fire hazards.,,, Metallic trees are con- dtictors of electricity and should not be decorated with strings of lights, but illuminated with floodlights. Some plastic trees, made from Styrene materials, are 'flammable"; unlike those made from polyvinylchloride. All trees should be removed from the- home as soon as possible after the Christmas celebrations. competitive pri _ cleanout, conditioning• Contadt: DOUG. TIFFIN 357-3608 . . or LUCKNOW.
