Leahy Award La Leche League approved by university meets in Wingham The Senate Scholarship Committee of the University of Western Ontario has given final approval to a Dr. P. J. Leahy Award. The total amount of money in the award so far is $2,300. This includes $762 from the farewell dance and the remainder is contributions from local individuals • and organizations. The amount of the award will depend on the interest earned on this money each year. The terms of reference for the aW,4`d are 4 folAroT : The award' will go to a student graduating from the Ripley Secondary School, F, MRS. LOVIS STONEM9USE E. Madill Secondary School, Wingham, Walkerton District Secondary School or Sacred Heart High School, Walkerton, and enrolled in the MD, communicative disorders, physical therapy or occupaticinal therapy programs in the faculty of medicine at UWO. Preference will be given to first-year students, however students in any year are eligible t(o apply. Where there is more than one appli- cant, pagerence will be given t'o tthe,, liaat-y‘a r student showrng the greatest financial need. Mr and Mrs Robert Gras hy of Teeswater and district communities in recognition of Dr. Leahy's service to the area for 27 years. La Leche League of Belgrave began a new series at the home of Mrs. C. Schenk, Wingham. The topic of 'discussion was "Advant- ages of Breastfeeding to Mo - thea and Baby". The mothers . explained why they originally had decided to breastfeed their. babies, then why they were still breastfeeding or would breastfeed the next baby. Among the many reasons mentioned were bonding, allergies and support of husbands. • It was announced that' Mrs. Margaret Bennett - Alder, director of leaders for Canada, has been elected to the LLLI board of directors. Just a few of the outstanding accomplishments of, LLL of ' Canada during her term of • office include: a successful cooperative effort between LLL of Canada and .the Canadian Department of Na- tional Health and Welfare to Sandra Currie graduates Sandra Currie received her Bachelor of Education degree from the faculty of education at the University of Western °Mario, 4.,Ondon. Sheahas accepted a teaching position at the North Ward Public School in St. Marys, Ontario. Sandra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Currie of RR 3, Wingham. Dr. Ruth Tatham speaks on Alzheimer's Disease FORDWICH — The Women's Institute held an open meeting with ap- proximately 60 attending to hear Dr. Ruth Tatham of the Homewood Psychiatric Hospital, Guelph, speak on Alzheimer's Disease. A deterioration of the brain for which there is no awe as yet. Patients in different stages of the disease can be violent and in the final stage cannot think clearly, are very forgetful, do not remember names or people, not even loved ones. It was first separated from other brain diseases by a Dr. Alzheimer, a pathologist in Munich, Germany, after much testing under microscopes. This disease is not caused by hardening of the arteries. nor is it senility. Death often comes from pneumonia rather than from the disease. Dr. Tatham stated it usually begins in the age group from 45 to 60 years and more females than males are affected There are 100,000 deaths a year in the US, attributed to Alzheimer's Disease It is very hard to diagnose and after all the first related tests are eliminated, the final diagnosis is Alzheimer's. There is no pain with it, only personality changes. A question period followed and Dr. Tatham was thanked. Lunch was served, allowing some the freedom to leave if they so wished. During the business part of the meeting members an- swered the roll call, "Something you would like to have done but have not had the opportunity". It was reported that $893 was collected for the Canadian Cancer Society. Members agreed to sponsor a float in thea, parade for Howick's 125th anniversary and to also sponsor a queen for the celebrations. MRS JOE WALKER Bluevale Rev. Les Halliday was rushed by ambulance to Palmerston Hospital 'on Monday as a result Of a fall at his home. He was later taken to Uni- versity HOspital, London, 'where he has since under- gone surgery for a broken hip. He also has broken feet and other injuries.
