Dr. Ruth Tatham speaks
on Alzheimer's Disease
FORDWICH — The
Women's Institute held an
open meeting with ap-
proximately 60 attending to
hear Dr. Ruth Tatham of the
Homewood Psychiatric
Hospital, Guelph, speak on
Alzheimer's Disease. A
deterioration of the brain for
which there is no awe as yet.
Patients in different stages
of the disease can be violent
and in the final stage cannot
think clearly, are very
forgetful, do not remember
names or people, not even
loved ones. It was first
separated from other brain
diseases by a Dr. Alzheimer,
a pathologist in Munich,
Germany, after much
testing under microscopes.
This disease is not caused
by hardening of the arteries.
nor is it senility. Death often
comes from pneumonia
rather than from the disease.
Dr. Tatham stated it usually
begins in the age group from
45 to 60 years and more
females than males are
affected There are 100,000
deaths a year in the US,
attributed to Alzheimer's
Disease It is very hard to
diagnose and after all the
first related tests are
eliminated, the final
diagnosis is Alzheimer's.
There is no pain with it, only
personality changes.
A question period followed
and Dr. Tatham was
thanked. Lunch was served,
allowing some the freedom
to leave if they so wished.
During the business part of
the meeting members an-
swered the roll call,
"Something you would like
to have done but have not
had the opportunity". It was
reported that $893 was
collected for the Canadian
Cancer Society. Members
agreed to sponsor a float in
thea, parade for Howick's
125th anniversary and to also
sponsor a queen for the
celebrations.
